I think there were probably 10-15. But you don't need to perform at that level week in week out. All the big clubs have games where they look average but manage to grind out results. It feels like in most games we have to outplay the opponent to win, which is very hard to sustain. I can't remember one win this season where I thought wow we got away with it there.

Everton at home

Southampton away obviously.

Beating Villa home and away.

Away at Palace?

The win against Spurs was far from convincing..VAR helped us big time!

In person, Southampton and Arsenal. West Ham away was weirdly good as well.

West Ham away is a good shout, reserve side out and won 2-0. Cant get anymore top 4 than that!

That's the difference the big teams tend to find away. Whether is a sneaky dive in the opposition box or whatever.

Sometimes you can beat teams by just out battling them even if the performance isnt good, I can think we have ever out battled opposition. Only really Everton at home I thought we got away with it, that was the first worrying performance for me as Silvas Everton were better than us that day, they out fought us and outplayed us first half

Fair enough, but I think that game was fairly even and a point was probably a fair result. It wasn't like we were under the cosh and Everton created chance after chance.

I thought we played very well and, as I've had quite a few arguments with my spurs mates, we took the lead in that game, ref and linesman gave it, VAR chalked it off.

They seem just to focus on the Son disallowed goal.

Of course it did - but does that mean any win is a 'top 4 performance'? Without wishing to be provocative, was Bournemouth's win over us a 'top 4 performance'?

I am of course being silly here - but do you see what I mean? Honestly, how many games were there where you thought 'Wow, we deserve to be up there'? For my part, looking back, it's not as many as I remembered.

I think this is where we agree to disagree as we class performances and wins differently.

To answer your question - yes, a top 4 performance, for reasons given previously, can be either a 9-0 win against Southampton or a 2-1 last minute win against Everton. Like I said, there is no team who will something with fantastic performances for 38 games or 6/7 cup ties. Usually, the vast majority of performances are run of the mill or mediocre. I mean, how many of Chelsea and United's performances were amazing ? Go even further, how many times after the turn of the year did Liverpool grind a result. Like I said, to perform when things are not going well is a performance fitting of a successful side "who deserve to be up there" as is an absolute annihilation of a team.

You will be waiting a long long time if you want the team to have 30-35 fantastic performance to be up there. I just happen to enjoy performance where we get something through sheer determination as much those where we destroy teams like we did to Newcastle (home and away) and Southampton. I think it shows the mark of a good team.

Soton away (obviously)

Spurs and arsenal at home.

Palace and Villa away

Often wondered how we'd have got on if the Man City and Liverpool games hadn't have been back to back.

Might have had time to get 3 points from an easier game, after City, and got our confidence back.

We'll never know, but those 2 defeats shook us😒

It depends how you define top 4.

Playing well and smashing teams (Villa both league games, Southampton, Newcastle both games) or grinding out results (Sheff Utd both games, Everton home, Brighton away).

That's interesting, because I thought the first half was absolutely fantastic. The less said about the 2nd half, the better!

Agreed. The game should have been put to bed way before HT and then I think we would have been relatively fine with Brendan making such a substitution!

The 2 performances against Newcastle (5-0) and Southampton (0-9) were exactly how you would expect a top 4 side would take apart a side down to 10 men.

Good shout with the Newcastle game. We have a great record at home against them but we demolished them, like a top 4 side generally would. Same with away game, too. Got the job done even though Newcastle were crocked.

Arsenal at home was superb by leicester

southampton away

chelsea second half away- superb

villa away

palace was so assured second half, i thought top four was on and a title challenge possible.

The obvious ones are Southampton 9-0, Newcastle 5-1, villa 4-1 and 4-0, Tottenham 2-1.

less obvious and many may not agree, Liverpool away. Felt really hard done by to not get a point and the manner of it. Felt that we did amazingly well against one of the best Liverpool sides of all time at their place, rode our luck at times and didn’t deserve to win it, but we gave them and game and stayed in it.

Not too hot on sheffield united (A), palace (A), man city (H), palace (H). Appart from that vardy goal i remember us being pretty uninspiring for SU (A), palace (A) we were only creating chances from set pieces our wingers were shocking that game, man city (H) i thought they were there for the taking, they were way off their usual pace but we were too frightened, palace (H) they were more shite than we were good that game.

Yeah its a fair point teams with a winning mentality can win games in many different ways, an when we look back to 2016 what was it 7 1-0 wins, and 4 back to back, the game management shown in those performances, even though it wasn't pretty to watch is what makes the difference at the end of the season, Burnley Away, Southampton at home Brighton home, Watford away, Norwich away and Bournemouth away that 2016 team even today would of picked up more than 2 points from those games.

First 20 minutes down at Brighton I remember saying to my son we look like Man City. We might have had 5. Actually got 0. Was a nice 2-0 in the end. Brighton fans on the train back saying we were just a different class.

Wind on to a few weeks back and we made them look like Man City for the first 20 at our place.

Probably not that many at all.

Even when we were playing 'well' early in the season I can't say I was exactly wowed but that's what this boring style brings I guess.

I can't say we were boring during the early part of the season. Games against Bournemouth at home, Newcastle, Southampton, Palace, Villa, and others we were along way from boring.

Whilst we have played some truly turgid stuff after Christmas, I really enjoyed the first half of the season.

The first 16 or so games, most of them, I thought we played really good football and the results were there too. After that there was a handful of good performances but generally mid table rubbish. We seemed to struggle for a complete 90 min performance. There was always 30-45 min glimpses of what we were before mid-December.
