FIRST TEAM

With a number of first team stars reporting for international duty next week, Brendan Rodgers will welcome a contingent of the Club’s youngsters into his plans.

- Brendan Rodgers discusses his plan of action as several Foxes head off for the first international break of 2020/21
- The Northern Irishman will welcome players from the Under-23s into the fold
- City drew 0-0 with Sheffield Wednesday at Loughborough University Stadium on Saturday afternoon

Following two pre-season fixtures – the latest a goalless draw with Sheffield Wednesday – Leicester City have a week to prepare for their friendly clash with Blackburn Rovers at King Power Stadium on Saturday 5 September (1pm BST kick-off).

However, Rodgers will be without several players due to the first international break of 2020/21, and says those coming into the fold will allow the Foxes to continue their preparations ahead of the new campaign.

He said: “A lot of the players are away from tonight, so they'll go away and meet up with the international teams and the [other] guys will stay. We'll be joined by some of our Under-23s players.

“In fairness to them, they've been with us over this COVID-19 period, so they've been used to working, and you see them in the background working away as well, so we'll still have a good number and we'll continue with our preparations. And the fans have seen plenty of those young players in the last couple of games.”

Rodgers and the Blue Army have already had the chance to get a look at some of those emerging youngsters in pre-season, and several have stood out, according to the Northern Irishman.

He added: “These guys are not 17/18. A lot of them are 20 to 22, so they're a good age and they've absolutely been superb since they came in. Their attitude has been great, they've shown respect, but they've played with no fear and looked to try and impress.

They're a talented young bunch. Some of them will probably end up going out to Championship clubs and League 1 clubs to continue with their development as well.

Brendan Rodgers LCFC TV

“Obviously [there are] one or two younger ones, like Sidnei [Tavares], who is obviously younger than a number of the others, and has come in and done very well also.

“So yes, they're a talented young bunch. Some of them will probably end up going out to Championship clubs and League 1 clubs to continue with their development as well.”

This surely points to KDH going out on loan then. He talks about 'them' as plural but can't think of anyone else who would be Championship level?

Unless it's Benkovic meaning a CD is incoming???

I can't be the only one who thinks it's absolute nonsense that these internationals are still going ahead, surely?

You're not, it's ludicrous.

With internationals, injuries and if the U23's go on loan we'll struggle to make a 5 aside v Blackburn.

I remember the days when we only had 2 squad members playing for their countries, Keller and Kaamark or something and I longed for more...

It's a nice problem to have if that makes sense.

Absolutely bonkers international matches now

Ridiculous that they are, just gives more opportunities for infections. Especially so close to the new season. Honestly an appauling decision

Just proves that it’s all about money and not about safety. Against modern football.

This - if Rodgers is focusing on what every other PL club does i.e. loan our players to lower leagues (with the exception of a couple) then we must/have to be bringing in a minumum of 3/4 players. If we don't you can forget about the EL because I genuinly don't think we'll have the fight in the PL after potentially getting trashed in the EL pots we are likely to be in.

BR hasn't talked about transfers once this summer nor has he spoke much to the media outside of our clubs media. Someone itk please enlighten me and save my soul.

The fa need the money the intl games bring.   I am not interested in southgate etc.

All fans should refuse to watch to devalue these games

There needs to be a pathway to the first team.  I would rather have these guys than Ryan bennet

The pathway in our academy isn't ready or talented enough for our ambitions. We need quality incoming signings or this season will be a bloodbath.

Fully agree, anyone who thinks Tavares is ready (even cameo) for a season in Premier Lge is still under the influence.
I’m all for the good enough old enough adage but this kid has not stood out like say a Rooney or Rashford who were both 16 when they made their statement of intent.

KDH is again unfortunate in the position he plays, will he get worth while time staying or better to go to championship and have a seasons worth of games then come knocking next season, he is aided there by we won’t buy another CM so it’s win win for him to go on loan.

Thomas is different, for sure he is not a starter yet as in #1 starter, again think Rooney when you 1st saw him, but he is good enough to hold a place as back up and gain his experience with cup and cameo appearances but we should be looking for a clone of Ricardo for LB who Thomas can support.

I have not seen any other U23 that realistically is pushing to even be a back up in their respective positions let alone start, they need sensible loans.

He has a plan ?   Does it include passing the ball forwards.

Hope its better than the one  he has used for most of the year so far

Are the players away on International duty needing to isolate when they get back or are they in a special bubble or something? I see Çağs is hanging out with a friend in Turkey right now, they’re on our isolation list 🤔

So what is the plan? Some guys are off on intl duty. We will play the guys we have and may let them go out on loan.

My mum could have come up with that..  I guess I was hoping for something cunning that no one would have foreseen

It’s absolutely mindless...... surely the ambition is to reduce the potential for any interruptions to the season, and I can’t imagine this will help....
