Need to buy a striker

I am getting slightly worried that other teams like Man U, Spurs, Southampton etc etc have all purchased new strikers in the last few days. What happens if Vardy gets injured or has to miss afew games for other reasons. We need a strong continental striker with a cool sounding Italian name hmmm luv to hear your thoughts guys!

Iheanacho would be perfectly ready to step up, and will be given games at some stage. Barnes and Perez could easily do the job.

No point spending 30million plus, that’s what it will cost to get someone better than Iheanacho- to sit on the bench in case Vardy gets injured. Besides who would you remove from the 25 man squad to accomodate a new striker.

I want Iheanacho to score more goals in Premier League games and not just in cup competitions, i can't see him score particularly if he comes on with 10mins remaining. I luv players like Richarlson etc who you know given the chance are more likely to score than miss which I'm afraid is the reverse Iheanacho

It's tricky. If Vardy gets injured, we're screwed. If he doesn't, we really don't need another forward. Iheanacho is ideal back up standard and Perez is effective there too. Barnes in a 2 would be promising as well. 

 

More of an area to address next summer I reckon.

Just worried when Vardy goes through a bad spell where he doesn't score for several games on the trot for various reasons as was the case last season, that's when we need another backup striker who guaranteed will score than hope he will score.

How much do you think a striker who is guaranteed to score in the PL would cost and why would he come here and play back up to Vardy? 
We have got to be realistic here, we play with one forward, if fit, that is always Vardy. 
There isn’t a striker who is better than Iheanacho who comes here to sit on the bench.

So you're proposing we buy a back up striker who is likely to score with every given chance but it also content to sit in the bench?

So you just sub Vardy out in the 7 or 8 games he's not going to score and then put him back in when he's ready to score again?

When we signed him, Iheanacho had one of the best minutes-per-goal ratios in the premier league. His stats now aren't quite as good, but they're still not bad and you've got to treat them with the context of a slightly more withdrawn role as second-striker/no10, substitute appearances and inconsistent runs in the side. He definitely is a natural finisher though and when he gets good service he's very effective. In recent years that service has been geared towards Vardy's style of play more, but as we're evolving the squad the types of chances we're creating will probably start suiting Iheanacho more.

 

If you want some specific data to go off, here's last seasons' conversion rate/shots on target:

 

Vardy is clearly in a league of his own with a high SoT% and the highest conversion rate (by 5 %points), but Iheanacho is still out there in the upper-right with one of the best SoT%s in the league. With more opportunities presented to him, he'll have a pretty good chance of a decent goals return. And of course, if Vardy is out then him getting a run in the side will be great for two reasons; 1) his confidence will rise and he'll benefit from being the main striker and 2) our play style will adapt to suit him more rather than the types of chances we make for Vardy.

 

Beyond Iheanacho we still have other options anyway. Barnes could do a job, but Perez even more so might be utilised. Remember, his natural position is as a striker where he had a very solid return for an average Newcastle side, and with him potentially being forced down the pecking order by Ünder a stint as the central forward might well bear fruit.

 

 

Overall yes, a new striker would be ideal, but it'll be incredibly difficult to bring in someone good enough to lead the attack longer-term who is also happy to play second-fiddle to the reigning golden-boot winner who doesn't look to be going anywhere anytime soon (even the big clubs struggle to get in top-level strikers as backup). We've got good enough options to be able to see us through the season, especially given how much we've already spent on other higher-priority areas this window. We may look again in January or more likely next summer for someone (I imagine we'll still be in for Edouard from Celtic), but right now we have reasonable depth for a club of our size .

How many teams do you know that have a 20+ goal a season striker and a backup striker who can bag 10+ if he had the minutes on the pitch?

 

There aren't many and we are 1 of them. Iheanacho, given minutes, is about as reliable a backup as you're gonna get. Doesn't kick up a stink about his role. His link up play is arguably a shade better than Vardy's and would mean more goals laid off for Under, Barnes etc.

 

Weve scored 7 goals from open play in 3 games, Vardy has 1 of them. We'll be fine.

I have my doubts about iheanacho, could well blossom or be a dud if he takes over Vardy, I also think he’s very much a confidence player.

 

I can’t see Perez doing a job up top,  to lightweight for me.

 

Ready made replacements will be very tough to replace Vards, it would cost us millions and it doesn’t guarantee success,  I wouldn’t mind us trying to sign a young striker around 20 with bags of potential who’s prepared like Soyuncu and wait in the wings, defo a route we should be exploring.

The only time we needed to buy a striker was that January transfer window when we won the league, we didn't really have any backup to Vardy in a prolific sense, Ulloa and Okazaki were the other forwards IIRC.

 

We took a gamble and it payed off, but any injury to Vardy in the back end of that season would have surely cost us the title.

Im sure many won’t agree but I think Josh King at £10m could be a realistic backup striker signing that could do a job when needed but happy enough to stay on the bench. But highly doubt we bring in one this window.

The issue there though is they'll be 3rd or 4th choice as well. We need a reliable impact player but they aren't that easy to find. The ideal player would be someone who can play wide left or through the middle but even im struggling for realistic targets. Jens Petter Hauge going to Milan for £4m has pissed me right off.
