Boss. Bossman.

Always.

Why?

Yes I could be your boss but I wouldn't hire you.

I renewed my passport, just because my old one ran out, so no particular urgency. I was shocked  (sadly - says a lot about my cynicism) by (a) how easy the process was; (b) how communicative the passport office was; and (c) how quickly I got the new document - ordered on Thursday 22 January, arrived 31 January.

Good to know that some things work.

"Hits different" being used for the most mundane things ever. "Pint on the way back home from work on Wednesday hits different" well not really. Or King's Lynn FC social media posting "Tuesday night at the Walks hits different" which I'm hoping is ironic but then again probably not.

I have never heard or read this expression until now.

People saying "Perfect!" in response to a simple task achieved adequately. Much like the word it has replaced in this aspect, awesome, it devalues the original meaning of the word.

After working in the US got into saying 'awesome' for day-to-day things. Took a few years after moving back to London to shake that off

Gumtree.

Against my better judgement, I've placed an ad on that site

As per my previous handful of times used it, the results are exactly the same.

*Within a few hours, someone messages to ask if the item is still available. I reply it is and then? Nothing.

*Or, you may get as far as arranging for the item to be collected, but no one turns up.

*You put 'collection only', and folk ask if I'll post it.

*You are giving something away and they ask, will you deliver - even if its 50 miles away!

I'm convinced that there are some people who spend their days on Gumtree looking for newly placed ads and think, Snigger, I'll going to have some fun here.

I’d be a billionaire if I could somehow hook this forum up to the grid & be able to provide power to 5m homes with the amount of wasted energy it generates & that’s only on a single deadline day,  just imagine what it could produce in a season.

my all time favourite is answering 20 questions on the condition, shape, colour, age, weight, and then not getting an offer. or the rude people who come straight in with an offer of 10%, no hello, just, wil lyou take a tenner. yeah, ill take that tenner and shove it up your arse. **** head

Semi-related and semi-counter-argument I guess.

But my interpretation is that our brains evolved the feeling of boredom as a feeling of discomfort in a lack of social engagement in the same way it evolved the feeling of hunger as a feeling of discomfort in the lack of food to convert to energy.

The boredom urge always helped us survive by getting us to go out and play or socialise with your friends and family in order to bond with other members of our pack so we’d work together, as it was easier to survive as part of a pack.

The internet and modern 24/7 news cycle manipulates that by getting rid of that boredom discomfort by constantly giving us more media and content to consume instead of using it to go out and have fun and socialise with other humans.

I’m not putting fault on anyone. I’m as addicted to it as anyone, but I also think so much of the mental health problems endemic in society come from how far less social we all are now - how much harder it is just to make friends and hang out with people because we don’t let ourselves get bored enough to encourage us to constantly do that.

The news cycle and wasted energy - and reality tv politics - is all just a way to get rid of boredom for the most part. Both anger and contentment makes you feel less bored, it doesn’t matter which is which - but it’s all detrimental long term as boredom should be a good thing, it should get us all to socialise and bond with each other more.

As the kids in the 00s said - Hate the game, not the players.

Having just had a child with a non Brit, and trying to move to abroad, we've been coming into contact a lot with both British state bureaucracy and that of the mother's home country. It is quite surprising as you say how smooth and easy the process of obtaining stuff from the British state is. Unfortunately it feels like our elected officials are always threatening to make these processes more complicated and unsuccessful to win votes from a section of our society.

Out of curiosity which country is it?

I've had a few friends move and live abroad, those who found it easy luckily had family living out there with visas, those who didn't sadly had the same experience you seem to be having

Bulgaria. It's ok, better than Italy. But very much 'don't call us we'll call you' when you apply for something like a passport etc...

Anyone who says they don't get anything out of their licence fee is flat-out lying.

I heard a bloke on a BBC radio station say he never uses the BBC. The presenter was quick to counter with why are you listening to this then? That people moan about 48p a day makes me laugh.

Always people who chuck silly money at subscription services they never use too.

Even if they canned everything but iPlayer amd BBC Sounds, everyone in the country would find plenty of stuff up their street.

I've had this more often with Marketplace.

I listed an item on both a couple of weeks ago, someone via gumtree bought within 24 hours. No silly offers or messages. It was a pleasant surprise.

I sold 3 or 4 items on Gumtree last year and had no real bad issues. Only once did someone agree a price and want to collect it then complete silence.
