The England batting lineup is at least as good as the Indian one here, and the Indian attack sans Bumrah is certainly no more threatening than the English one. If they don't at least match this first innings total, it'll be because of sloppy errors - which is of course possible.

You know more than me it sounds

Seems to me though that losing an early wicket or two is par for the course regarding England. Didn’t happen in the second innings of the first test, although I was surprised at that

It does seem to happen more often than not, though usually there's something of a score on the board when it happens because of the playing style England have adopted - today is a bit of an exception there.

These two looking to steady things a bit and see off the new ball. They're both the kind of players that can then score faster as time passes.

England are shaky here. Very shaky.

I'm not a fan of this "we can chase anything - we have no fear" philosophy. It may be the case for Stokes, but clearly not for some our other batters (except Root). I know it worked in the first test, but there was a bit of luck involved.

Often happens when you have had a team on the field for a long time, tired minds make bad decisions, it's called a test match for a reason.

Long way to go.

It works rather more often than not.

There's still a lot of batting, and a lot of play left. Let's not be too hasty to rush to judgement.

This happens so many times where the batting team gets a giant score of 600 and then the opposition are on a hiding to nothing. The bowling first and chasing only works IF the opponents get around 400 max, OR you get a good start. Like here, England know really they have to get around 500 to even get a draw, it demoralises you straight the way.

Flat pitch, rip up the script and bat first. Runs on the board is the way to apply pressure, then it really doesn't matter if the pitch is a road or not, you are forced into mistakes.

At least a big defeat might bring them back down to earth, get Archer in and maybe Bethell for the Lords test and freshen things up.

I want it to work, but sometimes you have to look at the wicket and the conditions and say "let's get the runs on the board and put THEIR batters under pressure."

Certainly agree you need to play the situation.

Just see far too much reactionary stuff being piped in every time this team seem to be in a bit of a pickle that sometimes then seems a bit daft (and, oddly enough, not revisited by those who pipe it in) later.

Get Rehan Ahmed in for Pope and Bethell in for Crawley. Archer for Tongue.

Rehan for Bashir, I would think. No point in compromising what is still a strong batting lineup for the sake of including more than one spinner.

Agree Bethell deserves his chance, and Archer (fitness of course depending).

Fair enough. That's the beauty of cricket.

All the talk of "Bazball with brains" lasted for a while didn't it.

You only need to look at the Indian scorecard to know that you need to get yourself in to score runs on this pitch. But this lot just cannot help themselves. There's no thought process aside from "lets go for it".

Just get yourself in and score from there. You've been put in to chase 600 at 5pm. Just see the new ball off and press the accelerator then. Root will go big but run out of partners as we're bowled out for 300.

Brook is in now looking like a cat on a hot tin roof.

Forget Rehan's bowling, he's a class top order batter as well.

Everyone looks like a top class batsman with the Kookaburra ball this season.

Rehan will end up back in the England team at some point. but as an all rounder.
