Another thing, Smith is rapidly becoming a most reliable option both in front of and behind the stumps.

The only thing missing now is a top of the line spinner, just to add another string to the bow beyond "doesn't matter how many you score, we'll chase it down".

Think I'd bat him at 6 as he's a proper bat and would give him more time. Stokes at 7 now feels about right.

Only difference is that team wouldn’t be in a position where we’d need 300+ in the first place.

Right, exactly. Just needs a world class spinner. We have the quicks, they're just all crocked or out of form right now.

Yeah, would agree there.

They obviously won’t change things for the 2nd test but if we’re being completely honest here, Bashir is nowhere near good enough as a frontline spinner. I doubt he will get too many wickets all series and I seriously think England need to be brave and look into another potential option for the Ashes as Bashir will get destroyed. Not sure who’s next in line but does Rehan come into contention? I appreciate he’s not bowling much for us but his batting has been excellent recently.

Didn’t see that coming after day 1. Looking forward to edgbaston and OT now. Bring on the £8 pints!

Very controlled effort by England really .

Solid platform and didn’t panic when a couple of wickets went down unlike India in their innings .

Buzzing for it too. In the Hollies for this!

It was a good performance - but I think India let us off the hook a bit with some poor catching and an ill disciplined batting collapse in the 2nd innings. That match could very easily have gone the other way. I think this is an extremely close series and I'm really looking forward to the next four matches.

The word around is that they really rate Bashir. Wouldn’t be surprised if Ahmed tours though as he’s an extra batting option which we are going to need.

Think we need to bring Yadav/Sundar or someone who can be a better all rounder than Thakur. I know he got a couple of wickets but he's not got the vigour or conviction to be an alternative bowling option. And if you don't have that, or be an adequate batter to elongate the batting card, you're pretty useless.

I think they just see him as a young player who will only improve but we’ll see .

BTW  is a score from 1948 by the Aussies v England still one of the highest run chases ever ?

Bradman at his peak I guess .

I'm very puzzled at an umpire review for fair catch just now that showed it clearly going into the West Indies Keeper's gloves, but the 3rd Umpire gave it not out.

If India want to win here, they need better bowlers then Krishna. All that supposed talent and he's the best they've got. With Bumrah missing 2 out the next 4 tests, this will be an easy series win for England.

Australia look awful

Little coincidence their highest scorers are Khawaja and Head.

Khawaja needs the runs, I'm not sure he'll make the Ashes if he doesn't get runs in these matches. He'll be 39 in December.

I hope not, Headingley was such a good test because it was so close. We don't want walk overs in test cricket. I think their batting will still be very strong and make them difficult to beat, while Yadav looks likely to give their bowling more variety. To be fair, both sets of bowlers looked under-cooked

He’s a shoe in. No way they’ll get into the Ashes without an experienced opener.

They do have other options they just refuse to select them, Konstas aside, they've mainly tried lads who aren't openers lol
