Anyone playing at the top level or even near it, is earning outrageous money, I get more wants more, I get being a footballer is a short career, I also appreciate its easy for me to say from my perspective but even if it was on slightly less money if I had the talent to be playing at that level i'd want to be playing, week in, week out.

 

This is another huge problem in the game, for a player, representing your country is the biggest achievement you can accomplish. Where’s the incentive to move and prove your worth if the manager will select you regardless of how much you play. 
 

It’s a shame because Southgate’s early days he refused to pick players who wasn’t playing for there clubs.

Apparently Gary Lineker's BaSiC HiStOrY is better than yours. 

 

What he actually compared was Braverman's rhetoric and her habit of "othering" (a typical component of fascist propaganda) to the rhetoric used by the Nazi party during the inter war period and it's rise towards power. 

 

He was not wrong. 

 

Maybe if your BaSiC HiStOrY were a little better you would have understood that nuance.

It's like the international break unshackles the right wing nutjobs on here to unleash their nonsense.

 

It's officially over now so if we could go back to normal it'd be much appreciated! Let's get back to being very sensitive and upset everytime someone doesn't say we're amazing. That's what this thread if for.

I do wonder how many that criticise the tweet actually read it.  What he posted was factually correct, every criticism I have read of it hasn't been.

The thing is though, I see little difference from what the like of Phillips has done, went to City, training under some of the best coaches in the world, one of the best managers ever, amazing facilities, world class doctors and nutritionists etc whilst making eye- watering money and winning trophies but not playing a lot before being sold to the likes of Fulham where he'll still make good money and resume his career...

 

And...

 

Playing for Fulham week in/week out for years before eventually making that step to Man City at 27/28 and not playing whilst achieving everything I previously stayed. 

 

If anything  his approach is smarter because he's taking everything he can get whilst he can get it knowing the fact he played for Man City will be enough to ensure him a decent club next time and not playing reduces chances of injury.

I know what he was referring to and the rhetoric is completely different in a completely different situation. Absolutely no comparison.

I like Lineker and am an unashamed proper liberal, I hate government's rhetoric toward migrants. But the tweet was nonsense as Baddiel pointed out here, it does not really work as a comparison and to an extent it also diminishes the horror that was the holocaust.

Regardless, I don't care. You can remain in your ignorance, it's not my business. I didn't challenge you for your sakes, you're probably too far gone. 

 

But I'm not comfortable letting you spit obvious misinformation and (whether intentional or not) fascist apologism without correction. Especially when doing do is unfairly attacking a club icon who, quite frankly, we should be delighted is such a vocal human rights advocate in a world where football is becoming increasingly amoral. 

 

I find it extremely depressing how many Leicester fans get upset at Lineker because the Sun and the Mail tell them to.

Look, obviously 1930s Germany was a very different place to 2020s Britain. I'm not really disputing that the context is different. 

 

The point was that the language and idea of "othering" and demonising groups of people to attribute misplaced blame for a nation's (and significantly, let's be honest, it's economy's) problems draws significant parallels. 

 

Nobody, including Lineker, is disputing that othering your own citizens is a further escalation but I'm not sure that's the point. 

 

Afterall, how does it go again? First they came for the socialists and I did not speak out?

I got sick of coming back to this thread to find a political d**k measuring contest, so I went over to the Southampton boards to see if I could find anything unhinged to post here and get the thread back on track...

 

Nah, they're all actually talking about tactics and the game, and giving us a lot of respect. Boring lot. lol

I mean, we got relegated with a better squad than them, have arguably done better business than them, are above them in the league and we didn't just get hammered five nil. 

 

It would be a bit weird if they weren't being fairly respectful.
