....it  is a good performance by Birmingham, Dropping deep and defending well!!!

nb.

Man. City just scored, lucky break, a foul on a Birmingham player and a long strike going in with the scorer falling off balance.

Good performance?

Is this what people want?

& I don’t even mean after the 3 goals do people honestly want the mens team to relinquish possession to just sit in our 25yd box and defend like the Spartan 300

Our mens team have about 65% possession and have 2 or 3 shots on target all game.

Birmingham Ladies have had 17% possession and 1 shot all game.

I know which I’d prefer.

I’m assuming you favour the latter, but surely you see just having 17% only gives you that 1 chance and even if they scored the other team having 83% possession will eventually break the wall down just like Man C have tonight & once 1 goes in generally another follows as again per tonight.

The higher possession thinking is sound we need the players to make it click

No!!!!!! I wouldn’t.

I like the high possession stats and I think it’s the right direction to go in - but we do need to be a lot more creative with it.

Ultimately, creating chances is the main criteria, but if you do that and maintain high possession as well that’s it’s even better

What a job Lydia Bedford has done, when Morgan left we were bottom with 0 points after 8 games.

To come in and stay up by 5 point has been a massive achievement.

Must stay on and try continue our progress, the challenge next season is to close the gap in quality between us and the better side in the division.

She's great isn't she. So young as well, speaks with that calmness Pearson had.

She was an inspired choice, it would have been easy to pick one someone who has more league experience in the ladies or men.

She is someone the players can relate to and is a young and up coming coach.

The WSL has too many male coaches around 55% and there need to be more encouragement of young female coaches.

I think she'll stay, I think she would have done had they gone down the way its gone but they will have to buy her out of her FA contract you would assume

Lost 1-0. Certain relegation next season if they don't add goals to the squad.

Wonder what the odds are for both the mens and womens team to get relegated next season.

Leicester City's WSL survival and the ‘massive platform’ for women’s football in Leicestershire
Both Lydia Bedford and Ashleigh Plumptre have spoken about the team's survival in the WSL this season.

Leicester City Women are aiming to solidify their place in the Women’s Super League (WSL) next season after securing safety in their first campaign in the division.

After failing to pick up a point from their first nine games of the season, City went into the weekend’s final game of the campaign knowing that they would play WSL football again in 2022/23.

Birmingham City’s loss against Manchester City on Wednesday night condemned the Blues to bottom of the table and relegation to the Championship. It means that there was nothing riding on City’s trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the final game of the season on Sunday afternoon.

City were on the wrong end of a narrow defeat, Ashley Neville’s 49th minute goal being the difference between the two sides. But eyes now turn to next season as City look to replicate the mens team and establish themselves in the division.

“From our perspective it’s about having a really strong pre-season and being ready to start the season and compete with the teams we feel we can really push for points,” manager Lydia Bedford said ahead of the final game vs Spurs. “And we most certainly don’t want to be in a relegation battle come Christmas. For us, that’s in our control, we control our preparation, we control how ready the players feel to hit the season.”

Defender Ashley Plumtre is in agreement. “Ultimately just finishing higher than we did this season,” she said. “Competing with more of the teams in and around us and the games where we fell short by one goal or conceded in the last ten minutes.

“Those type of games next season we want to pick up a point or three. So having that mentality that we’re not going to be in the same position that we are this season.”

The WSL is growing every year, with interest in women’s football ever increasing. Survival is also a big positive for the team and the profile of women’s football in and around Leicestershire.

“It’s massive and I think if you look at the progression this season that the team has made, the support we get when playing at our home stadium, the King Power, it’s exceptional, it’s probably one of the best turnouts for games in the WSL, certainly for teams that are in and around us,” Bedford added. “So I think there’s a massive platform for women’s football to really develop in this area and hopefully one that we’re excited to be a part of assisting as it moves forward.”

“Probably one of my favourite parts of a matchday is seeing the players interact with young boys and girls after the game and the joy that that brings those young children,” she added.

“I think to have role models within the area that you live that are touchable and that you can meet and speak to is critical.

“In my generation that probably didn’t exist at that age group, so it’s such an important thing and fingers crossed we’ll see that really develop over the next five to ten years as this club hopefully solidifies its place in the WSL and goes onto achieve bigger and better things.”

Having been at the bottom of the table for some time before climbing above Birmingham, the battle to stay in the WSL went down to the wire, but it’s a season that Plumtre wouldn’t change.

“Nobody wants to be in a relegation battle but I actually wouldn’t have changed it because it’s the first time I’ve been in a relegation battle and I’ve learned a lot about myself and the team environment when things are tough," she said.

Bedford also said that the season will benefit City's young squad: "We’ve got a really good platform to build on and players that will hopefully be here for a number of years who can really grow as they get more experience in the WSL"

With safety secured with the players and coaching staff at home, did they follow the game that ultimately sealed their fate? “No, I didn’t. I didn’t, I didn’t even want to have to watch, I just kept myself busy,” Plumtre said, while Bedford distracted hearself too.

“I started watching part of it but then as it continued at 0-0 for most of the first half I decided to do a little bit of gardening.”

Looks like she's staying.

Are they still going to be playing 'home' games in burton?  It's a big problem in growing the fan base if they can't play in Leicestershire. I wish we had incorporated a stadium for the academy and women's teams within our new training ground.
