Exciting times for our academy. Hopefully we will end up like Chelsea at the moment where we are consistently bringing quality players through and selling on the ones deemed not quite good enough for a tidy profit. Good business model

U23's at home to Arsenal tonight, anyone going?

Great news about retaining category 1 status, I appreciate the direction the academy is heading in recent months. McGuinness is a genius move and Barradell being promoted from U16's coach to U18's is now paying dividends after a very difficult 1st year. Our U18's are in with a shout of the title, the PL Cup and the FA Youth Cup. Any 1 of those would be a massive statement even if winning things at that level isn't the be all and end all.

Was planning to but they sold out before I got a chance!

Looks like the match is being streamed thankfully

Good to see tonight and the next 2 are already sold out, should get a few more of the games down the KP next season, would sell more than the 400 odd at the training ground

...I would suspect getting a look at Alves and Braybrooke is a big feature in the need for tickets!!!

Always good to say that you saw them coming through.

would be interesting to know what other clubs in the EPL have cat 1 status. Assume the rich 6 do but who else?

28 teams that are CAT 1 I believe, they are the teams who make up the Premier League 2 Division 1 and Division 2

Arsenal, Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Blackburn, Burnley, Brighton, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Derby County, Everton, Fulham, Leeds United, Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Newcastle United, Norwich City, Nottingham Forest, Reading, Southampton, Stoke City, Sunderland, Tottenham, West Brom, West Ham and Wolves.

Looks like teams get audited every 3 years

https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/sunderland-academy-category-one-reid-17710283.amp

Academies are assessed on a three-yearly cycle and graded on a scale of one to four, with the elite Category One status given only to those that meet the highest standards.

The audit analyses every aspect of the academy, and factors taken into account in the final grading include coaching, training facilities, education, welfare provisions. and productivity.

"The audit process itself happened in mid-November," said Reid, who was appointed in 2018 following Stewart Donald's takeover on Wearside.

"You get ten days' notice that the auditors are coming in that week and it is a very detailed, forensic, examination of all the different elements of the academy.

"It takes in the recruitment process, the coaching, the analysis, the medical provision, the strategy and vision that you've got for the academy and the direction you are trying to take it in.

"All of that was documented in a 400-page booklet called the Academy Performance Plan with the help of our staff and it was completely revised from the previous one.

"Where other academies would probably just amend that booklet, we felt it didn't match the direction that we wanted to take the academy in, so it was ripped to bits and started again.

"Once that document is in place it is uploaded onto a platform so that the Premier League can analyse it and then when they come in, they check that you are complying with all the things you say that you are doing - so it's not a case of being able to pull the wool over their eyes and say you are doing this, this, and this, they want to see evidence of it.

"They check about 310 different points of compliance in the way that you operate and run the program.

"Again, they want to see evidence and it might be from a week ago, a fortnight ago, or two years ago.

"It's a tough process and it's very stringent.

so its hardly front page news then!

i suppose we need to make the most of any positive news at the moment !!

Yeah one of those things we should expect really for our level as a club

Suppose just a chance for the club to praise the academy really

Only for 3 years which he's already done I think. As soon as he's 18, likely to be a 5 year deal.

Ah Ok - I was thinking 3 years was 'long term'. Not sure I'd want to sign for 5 years at 18. I guess it depends how good the 3 year deal is.

First time for me tonight at the U23’s at the new training ground. Is there any hot food/drink available as it’s freezing?!

There hasn’t been when I have been previously

Would wear plenty of layers as it is quite open
