As far as I know once the defender touches it, it's basically a back pass and fair game.

 

Cracking second half and especially last 5mins.

That is just an utter nonsense. If that isn't a refereeing error then the rules are completely stupid, and clearly made by people who haven't got a clue about the game.

It is legal. 

 

It's stupid that it's legal but it is. 

 

My personal argument would be that Garcia only needs to play the ball because of the immediate risk from Mbappe, which makes Mbappe active at the point the ball is passed. 

 

But because Mbappe is technically moving away from the ball, is behind Garcia, isn't physically impeding or interfering with him and isn't attempting to play the ball until after Garcia touches it, there's no grounds to rule him off. 

 

It's bonkers but it's in the current laws.
