I've gone for Pereira as: - He's a proven PL performer at WBA - He seems able to come inside, useful when we often play with fast, overlapping full backs/wing backs - Berardi would surely be too expensive in the unlikely event he wanted to come? - I know nothing about Madueke! Fnarr….. fnarr ….
Popular Post Finnegan Posted 28 July 2021 Popular Post Posted 28 July 2021 Awkward list really. Bailey (and James) - all pace, extremely streaky end product (with lengthy dry spells.) Berardi - brilliant work rate, unspectacular technical ability, fairly streaky end product (albeit consistent two years running*.) Madueke - largely unknown, one breakthrough season. Pereira - Knockaertesque pace but with surprisingly decent Premier League numbers. Possibly a bit on the slow side for what we're after. If offered them all at the same price, I'd probably lean towards Bailey purely because he's got ridiculous pace that there's just no real substitute for, he's amazingly still only 23 and Rodgers might be able to work on that end product. Definitely worth pointing out he's had some extremely barren seasons though. If Madueke was going to be ten mil or so cheaper than the rest, I'd probably opt for him. Given he's probably the biggest risk and PSV are demanding quite a bit, I'm less keen. Neither James or Pereira are at a level that we should be overly excited about. I think both would be better signings than Under and better than what we currently have but both would also feel like stop-gaps until we can actually make a Daka/Fofana/Ricardo/Tielemans quality signing in that position. * I'm really dubious about players that have shone over the last eighteen months playing in front of empty stadiums. Even our own, a la Iheanacho, I think it's going to be extremely interesting seeing what the impact is of these guys going back to playing in front of a full house, with all the extra pressure and expectation of the occasion that comes with that. Berardi hadn't managed double figures in five years (the only time prior he'd done it) pre-COVID. 7

We spent all of the previous summer window chasing after Trincao and at the end of the window he decides to stay. 12 Months later he is at a team who finished beneath us by the virtue of the connection the club has with his agent and not obviously for footballing reasons. At the end of Pereira's loan at the end of the last season, there may have been the possibility to pick him up, WBA signed him for £7.8m, they are now looking for £25-30m for him after one season. There is no reason why we cannot develop a player to meet the standards that we need, I believe he is already there and I do not see him as a stop gap signing.

Bit slow, lots of penalties, rarely starts more than 30 league games a season, had 3 separate injuries last season, likely to be the most expensive (3 years remaining on his deal), almost 27 too so if it doesn't work out we're probably lumbered with a player on big wages we couldn't recoup much of the fee on. I'd rather we signed him than no RW but I just get a sense it won't work out. Edited 28 July 2021 by Stadt 1
Langston Posted 28 July 2021 Posted 28 July 2021 I think Pereira would be the best fit but wouldn't be a signing I'd be overly excited about, on the face of it. 1

Agree with this. I think he is being a little overhyped on here, but still could do a job in a position we need filling.

brucey Posted 28 July 2021 Posted 28 July 2021 (edited) I thought the last poll option was our Ricky P, almost voted for him as I'm not too excited about the rest of them. Edited 28 July 2021 by brucey

Not for the first time, I'm left stunned by your apparently comprehensive knowledge of players from different European leagues. How do you find the time to watch and research so much football? I'm sure other posts have suggested that you're in employment and have a partner - and you come across as a sophisticated chap with other interests, a sort of Renaissance Man of the Welsh valleys. You also have 52k+ FT posts to your name. I no longer work full-time and no longer have a partner, yet I don't find the time to watch all these European leagues. Have you overcome the laws of physics to expand the boundaries of time? Are you a secret dole wallah, with one of those taxpayer-funded wide-screen TVs the Mail tells us about? Or are you just an exceptionally capable bullshitter? 1

How do you find the time to watch and research so much football? To be fair, I feel the same way about your knowledge of British politicians. I wouldn't consider myself an idiot politically, I keep fairly up to date with the news and understand current affairs but I swear you know the detailed voting history of all six hundred odd MPs like they were Top Trumps stats. It's the same principle really, just a different hobby. (I appreciate its a bit weird calling politics a hobby but I'd argue that increasingly in the modern world people treat their political affiliations exactly how sports fans treat their teams.) 1
sylofox Posted 28 July 2021 Posted 28 July 2021 I wanted to vote for Berardi but he's not on the list.

jayfox26 Posted 28 July 2021 Posted 28 July 2021 Can we not add Ghezzal and Perez to the poll? Many on here would love to see one of them start the season as our number 1 right winger
TheMightyFox Posted 28 July 2021 Posted 28 July 2021 I think Pereira is best player on that list currently when taking into account experience and cost, but personally I think Madueke is going to be a superstar.
