Harvey Barnes will wear the no.7 shirt for the new campaign, while new signing Ryan Bertrand will wear the no.5 shirt previously worn by Wes Morgan. Meanwhile, fellow new arrivals Patson Daka, Boubakary Soumaré and Jannik Vestergaard will wear the no.29, no.42 and no.23 shirts respectively.

Don't usually read anything into squad numbers but I do get the feeling Benkovic has not been given his previous no.16 because he's got no future at the club.

16 will be Vestergaard’s no doubt.

OK so the relevance of squad numbers is one aspect of football I've never understood, so please help me out. For example, why is everyone (by "everyone", I mean some people on twitter 😄) excited that Harvey is number 7, and why is wilfs number so high when he's a first team nailed on starter?

7 is just one of those numbers you see the best wingers usually have, Ronaldo, Giggs, Cantona, Pires, Best, Dalglish etc.

 

Wilf is 25 because it was made popular by Kanu - quite a few nigerian players use it (https://www.allnigeriasoccer.com/read_news.php?nid=37369)

Daka previously wore 20 at Salzburg but Hamza has it currently, so he will have obviously been given the choice of available numbers to use, as he didn't take 19 I assume he took 29 for a personal reason (20+9 maybe? lol)

 

Soumare was 24 at Lille but Mendy has it currently, so maybe he went with the idea of reversing and having 42? Maybe he likes Yaya Toure?

 

Bertrand one has me fuming haha I imagine he probably wanted 3 but as Wes has it (and probably wanted to keep it) 5 isn't a bad shirt number to pick up if offered!

Vestergaard is 2 for Denmark and was 4 for Southampton and Gladbach.

7 (randomly) at Bremen and 29 at Hoffenheim (not sure if some significance there to him?)

Before players had their own numbers given to them for the whole season, the team that started would just get no.s 1 to 11 on each match day, usually with each position having its own number, e.g. 1 - GK, 2 - RB, etc. 7 was traditionally the RW number, so many of the greatest attacking/flair players in history ended up wearing it.

 

Player numbers don't mean as much as they used to, but it is generally still a big deal to have a number from 1 to 11, as it often means you are (or have been) considered one of the club's best players.

 

Some players have a higher number that they prefer, though, just because it means something to them, or it's their lucky number or something, even though they could have a lower number if they wanted one.

 

I'm guessing Soumare is a fan of Yaya Toure!

Think you a spot on with this, Soumare has always prefered 24 or 42, same as Toure

However he randomly wore numbers 4 and 6 whilst at Lille too

- Daka had 20 at Salzburg but that’s Hamza’s number so 20 + 9 = 29.

- 5 was Wes’ old number and shows dressing room respect and a first teamer. 
 

That would be my guesses for why those numbers were picked.

I don't mind a centre midfielder having it but a left back it's annoying when we have a CB as 3.
