.... explains the Puel phenomena...!!!

First season success never good in the second.

You get the feeling he comes into a club, analyses the situation and then plays to their strengths.

Second season, he begins to implement his own style and ideas and failure ensues.

He maybe good as a scout or a coach but should not be near the managers position unless as an assistant and not making the final decision.

Let the nut see the shell!

When he first came in the footy was excellent. We'd been warned by Southampton fans to expect boring footy, and when Gray went on that run to slide in Vardy, the celebrations were followed by ironic chants of 'boring boring Leicester'. lol

The thing I don't blame him for was Mahrez' hissy fit over that first Christmas. He actively damaged our season by going AWOL. I do, however, blame Puel for not seeing the writing on the wall and deluding himself that he could convince him to stay... because he spoke French I guess? The plan was 'hold the ball and hope to get it to Riyad'. It stopped working when he wasn't on the pitch. Especially when Claude decided that Gray was the heir apparent to build the team around.

That seemed to be a turning point where Puel tried to start implementing his own style instead of relying on the counter attacking style which Shakespeare had left relatively intact. It was pants from thereon in.

There was no excuse for failing to coach us to press though. We made decent signings and brought through bright academy prospects like Chilwell and Barnes. But it falls on the manager to motivate those players, and Puel utterly failed in that regard. It was about as intense as a slug in a dish of beer.

He's probably a decent bloke - He certainly handled the tragedy well but unfortunately I'll never forgive him for dropping Vardy.

I went all the way to Brighton and on the coach journey finding out that we only had Shinji upfront I knew he had to go. Vardy came on after about 60 minutes and ran the show and got us a 1 - 1.

It's probably the singularly dumbest selection decision I've ever known and in my book totally unforgivable

Got to say… starting a thread looking for compliments about someone is usually best done when they’re succeeding somewhere else, not failing? lol

I don't know...the majority of the people on this forum would cut off their right arm to have the manager of a team currently sitting 16th in the Championship.

Didn't really want it to be about St Etienne but on them, we did take fofana from them, and we all know what a player he is.

I really wanted to discuss his time with us mainly.

Following our league win under Ranieri it was recognised that our style couldn't sustain us in the long term, we needed a plan B, a more possession based style that could pass it out from the back, so we weren't so reliant on playing on the break, a style it's fair to say the players favoured.

Ranieri tried in 16/17 and it ended in disaster, with a players revolt and Shakespeare taking over and us returning to type winning us success in the CL, however it couldn't last and Puel was brought in to do what Ranieri couldn't.

Puel inherited players that were on big money and unplayable in Silva, Slimani so I'm sure his budget relied on players going out to bring players in, new players were required though and for that Puel did a very good job, albeit there were some stinkers, with ghezzal and diabete but the others include maddison, soyuncu, Evans, Ricardo, ward and tielemens.

Puels plan seemed to be to discourage the quick long ball to vardy by playing deep lying midfielders and playing it out from the back, the trouble is we lacked enough creativity to provide vardy in the final third, vardy was more used to playing on the shoulder of the last defender and the style didn't suit the way he played and he was dropped for gray, which I think was an attempt to play a false 9, to play without a striker in a patient build up play but it didn't work well, we have to remember we'd lost Mahrez and was struggling to bridge that gap.

For me the missing link which Puel finally got was Youri, he was that box to box midfielder that could create chances and allow us to patiently transition the ball from defense to the final third, he just couldn't get the results post youri quick enough.

We also have him to thank for recognising the talent in Chilwell who many were writing off.

I think we are a far better side than we were in 15/16, I think vardy is a better all round footballer and I think Puel built some important foundations to our success, his methods were painful as a fan but necessary I think and when Brendan took over, he could see we had to basis/formula for a very good side that could compete for a European places and think it's harsh to say Puel time with us was a disaster.

Just my opinion.

Close thread before it gets out of hand.  Been done to death.

Sorry, thought this was a forum to discuss everything Leicester City and with posts on many leicester platforms about Puel at St Etiene and fellow Leicester fans slating him, I think it's relevant.

I seriously thought about not going to the games whilst he was the manager, it was that dull and boring. I’ve never felt like that before or since.

I felt like that the season we won the league after administration under adams, the football was pretty bad, long ball and even the 1 nil wins couldn't mask it but it was necessary and I recognise adams did a great job considering the circumstances

Thankfully the club have moved on a million miles from his tenure. I can see he’s consistent and his philosophy is much loved in France too

I don't think it has, we still play with a defensive midfielder, play out from the back, play with Evans, Ricardo, maddison, soyuncu and tielemens. A million miles, really?

I have absolutely zero respect for him. People point to whatever signings he made but to be honest we don't know what input he had in those since we are told recruitment has a lot of automany with the way the club is run. What I do know is that multiple players and journalists (including one who posts on this very forum) have come out and said what a nasty piece of work Puel is. From what has been said of him isolating individuals, treating employees with no respect and attempting his little divide and rule game I can only conclude Puel is a bully. Being good at your job is all well and good but first rule should be to approach the people who work for and with you like human beings. The man was trying to get rid of our greatest ever player for Pete's sake, a player who the season after Puel was rightly binned won the Golden Boot. Frankly, if Puel came out the tunnel at the King Power again for any reason i'd boo him. He's a cretin.

His story, I am sure, Sits somewhere between yours & @splinterdream

He was tasked to rebalance, reshape, reinvent the squad....He started off well, and his off- field, Management got bogged down, because of Previous

poor Ressource management...Under his tenure we invested in more better Class players, than misfits...

He tried to change our character & style, that wasnt his failure or downfall, und First Games & period of Puelball were successful & allowed us to Play

Some decent games & moments....

But I cant deny your last paragraph & those decisions around Vardy were not so a bad thought ( we needed even then Another Top forward & tactic)

He just, like you say actioned it so terribly wrong & seemed to lose any hind-sight ,of how to Shape the squad.

I'm not looking for compliments, I'm not looking for anyone to say Puel is a brilliant manager, I'm looking for a discussion based on my opinion that he built the foundations of our current side, a bit like the argument Nige built the foundations for the 15/16 side.

He won 3 in a row at St Etienne immediately before we nicked Fofana, and things went downhill straight away for them. Much like our form after Fofana's injury, except we happen to be luckier to have actual funds and squad players to patch the gap.

Don’t you think every manager would have dealt with that situation with the utmost respect?

I thought the same, what could he have done?
