Long story short, instead of my season ticket I've got a "paper" ticket for the Chelsea game. It's a print at home PDF.

Has anyone tried getting through the turnstile just using the QR code from one of them on your phone screen? Does that work? Does it fit in the reader?

I'm aware I can get it printed off at the ticket office, it's just extra hassle and a queue I'd like to skip.

You'd have thought in 2021, we could move to virtual tickets for people with smartphones. No season ticket cards, no paper tickets should be the norm unless you are not able to.

No reason why it *shouldnt* work, although I'm sure I've read something before where they explicitly say not to do that (can't for the life of me figure out why though).

I get the need for paper tickets as an option, but it makes no sense for it to be the default, let alone a requirement. Unnecessary waste, extra steps for the buyer and a lot of people don't have access to printers - especially with people not in offices anymore. Virtual tickets on smartphones would make things much simpler and if there is some reason why that won't work, can't they just load those tickets onto our existing season ticket cards so we can use those?

It will work, all the scanner is concerned about is seeing the code, it really doesn't care in what form it sees it.

My assumption is that they insist on paper to stop people fumbling around on their phone and holding queues up.

I read that many people had issues but maybe it does work in theory. You will probably have to turn up brightness, stop screen rotation etc. Also, the phone will probably have to be fairly thin/small as the scanners are not the biggest are they? They are made for plastic and paper. I feel like the gap is not that thick.

It definitely works in some (possible many instances), but I believe that the readers can sometimes struggle to read codes from screens, with the lasers reflecting off the screen.

For those that Park Run regularly, you will know that they also request the barcode to be presented not on the phone, for similar reasons (although I have tried it and it worked ok).

I called the ticket office and asked specifically this question before the Moscow home game, and was told it must be physically printed out.

Totally agree that in 2021 we should be able to use a QR code on our smartphones!

I’ve done it…. I did screenshot and cropped and rotated it it so  I could get the QR code at the right end of the screen (if that makes sense ?)

my ink was too thick on the printed out ticket

Even the cricket club have tickets that load into Google Pay. Went to see Blackburn v Sheffield United the other week and they had the same.

I think we just got lumbered with those fairly limited ticket scanners before this thing became commonplace and so we have to keep having printed tickets.

My mate and I have been trying this this season, always with a paper copy backup. We literally try just once or twice with the phoneh so as not to hold folks up. I'd say we've got in with the phone about 50% of the time. No idea why it works sometimes not others though I have noticed it can be tricky fitting the phone into the reader sometimes.

Agreed. A colleague is a Birmingham City fan and all their season tickets are now via QR code on the phone. Makes it so much easier

I always kept club-printed, proper tickets and I have a either a ticket or a ST booklet/card from every one of the hundreds of matches I’ve ever attended.

I haven’t been for a few seasons now because I live away, but a part of me is a bit sad to see genuine tickets go.

Had a moan about this to the club. They said print at home isn’t going away in the future and they won’t return to posting physical tickets. Best we can do if you can’t print is to ask them to go through the hassle of contacting them ahead of the match and hold them at ticket office - which again is an extra hoop to jump through on the day.

I think the reason they don’t want us to use phones is because of the style of scanners we have and the varying sizes of phones/quality of some cheap screens. The ones at Welford Road scan phones fine because they’re not built into the wall and they encourage that. I’m not a tree hugger, but it’s a lot of wasted paper over the course of a season.

I tried doing that at Wembley last international break, and ended up holding up the queue for a couple mins trying to get it to work.

Should be easier at the KP but id get there a little early so one of the stewards can buzz you through.

In the end, when I got there the queue for the ticket office was tiny so I just got it printed.
