The problem with winning aerial duels in a Zonal marking system is that the opposition get to pick the match ups. Don't fancy going against Soyuncu or Evans? Have the ball played into Thomas' or Castagne' zone and have Tyron Mings and the likes go up against them....

I just can't understand why we persist with it.

With Zonal marking, you have already shown your hand.

Apparently Rodgers is going to scrap zonal marking:appl:

They don't call him 'lightening' for nothing! Actually that's a little unfair, it must have taken quite some time to go back over all those notes.

Please let this be true

...listening to Rodgers interview, he seems convinced about marking zonally, he feels he is being let down by the "blockers" not performing their tasks!!!

Zonal marking is a two part plan, one does not work without the other.

We need to sign some Polish Border guards. They seem to block and deter anyone entering their zones.

What he said read like it was a specialist and new, as he talks like the input was new.

Rodgers says City currently have a set piece coach, after criticism of that area of their play. "They gave us some great input into the offensive and defensive side of it. I'm in favour of specialist coaches, and it's something we currently do here at the club."

What happened to a man on each post when defending corners? Schmeichel never comes out for them and if and when the attackers get there first the ball goes out of his reach by one post or the other.

New tactics need employing asap as me old dad used to say "get the ball in their half and then we play football", all this pissing about at the back is so infuriating, 22 passes later and we still have the ball in our own half.

It does sound like it was a short term thing (the stated input that  he had received) from this "specialist ".

Just a thought but why don't we put a man on the goal line for set pieces , and corners ,we are not that good at zonal marking imo .

...rumoured that he might be giving it up, or similar comments said by Rodgers!!!

It is going to be interesting tomorrow when they get their first corner or set piece.

I do wonder if some of the issues we have in defence are because both Evans and Cags are afraid of getting injured, perhaps BR has told them that if any one of them gets injured we are screwed so they are much more calculated in terms of going into 50-50s or putting their body on the lines, for example Cags for Villa's goal, he could have jumped back into Konsa but seemed liked he wasn't willing to do that.

It may not fit in with people's opinions, but Vestergaard was 8th in the list of defenders for Aerial duels won and 14th overall in 2020/21.

Yes, he's been crap in his City career so far, and it may require us to play a little deeper, but I think desperate times mean desperate measure.

The total volume of duels contested matters though to get the %.

He's in the 86th percentile for aerial wins p90 according to FBref, for a 199cm/6'6ft defender that's actually bit of a concern.

Only Levante and Barcelona fair wise as a % rate.

Interesting look at the inswingers number on the graph. Targeting Kaspers lack of dominance in that region?

think kasper being problem is a myth; we have looked fine defending corners with kasper there... it is the lack of a defender who wants to go win the header

also always thought wilf was far better in front post area than man marking where he always loses man

Kasper looked pretty good with Morgan and Huth in front of him...poor sod has Amartey and Cags now!!😢

It's also telling that we have scored 2 headed goals this season and they were feom Ricardo and Vardy. Our CBs want no part of heading the ball in either box...

Just because Schmeichel previously wasn't the obvious concern at defending set pieces (it's been a weakness of ours for nearly 2 years now) it doesn't mean he's not a problem. Yes, if we had 2 exceptional defenders aerially it might protect Kasper's reluctance and inability to command his area and when needs be come and collect or clear the danger but likewise if we had a goalkeeper capable of doing that it takes the pressure off us needing to have 2 or more very strong defenders.

I think it's a bit of both. Schmeichel would not be the calming or soothing assurance of a panicked stricken defence at set pieces and crosses and you only have to look at his windmilling shoves and scurrying about vs West Ham to see that. What on earth was he doing?

Spot on, couldn't agree more with this.

I think he's still scarred by the Tottenham own goal that cost us the match.
