No idea why this has stuck in my memory but Dennis Rofe scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Swansea on the Saturday that saw the final edition of the sports Mercury - more popularly known as the 'Buff'.

Used to deliver the Mercury and then back out to do the Buff a couple of hours later, reading it as I did my round.

Whitworth n Rofe...After Rodriguez....2 of the most reliable Fullbacks pairings which from then until now I cant remember being bettered.

They went into a tackle, they usually nailed it....& Both moving forward, either Glover, Weller would be involved.

A magical era.

He had a hell of a shot on him

remember one against Chelsea in a 3-0 win ?

Don't remember that one but I remember him scoring against QPR at Filbert Street with long range shots in two separate games. One was a hopeful punt into the box from near the halfway line and drifted over Phil Parkes into the net.

Jock Wallace hanging players on coat pegs lol

I won a competition with Junior Foxes and got a tour of the ground among  other things.  I met Jock as a seven year old.  I couldn't understand a word he said and he absolutely terrified me!

I was at the 4- 3 win at Birmingham. What a game! Jimmy Bloomfield set us up to play in similar formation to what he’d seen from the Dutch in that summer’s World Cup. Rofe, Weller and Wortho (2). One of my all time favourite games. Unfortunately we didn’t persist with the formation. I read later that some of the players struggled to sustain the level of running and energy required.

After six seasons at Filbert Street, Bloomfield left in May 1977 despite the Club being eighth in the top flight with three games to go, before losing their last three games and finishing 11th.

“Jimmy was absolutely first-class as a manager,” Dennis reflected. “We were upset when he lost his job. I think the directors might have wanted a little bit more. We had a little dip and Jim paid the price. I’ve since learned that directors can be funny people.”

A dip in form, with a fan base frustrated that previous good seasons (including a good cup run) were not being sustained. So the answer was to sack a successful manager. Still, couldn't happen now, could it?

Sounds similar to Brendanball.

He used to live across the road from me when I was young.  He seemed decent enough.  I was about 8 when I started going Filbert Street & he moved elsewhere after one or two seasons.  I remember he scored a few belters.

Interesting that his house was identical to ours.  A 3 bed detached.  He was a professional footballer playing at the top of his game.  My dad worked at Corahs

Best full back of that era (apart from Alan Woolett)😳

Whitworth got more recognition though, although how good he was defensively I can't recall. I definitely remember Alan Woolett but little about his game.

I'm pretty sure Woollett was a centre-half.

I was at that game. Fabulous day. Astonishing strikes.

Nah.  Full back.

I think he started off as a full back but move to CB,

If I remember correctly he wasn’t that great at RB and was considered a bit of a joke player.

Woollett was a centre back . I thought he replaced Graham Cross as a left sided centre back but memory isn’t reliable . He was the first scapegoat I can remember - no-one wanted him in the side
