We don’t need to sign anyone until the summer.

Players are coming back and you can’t get the right deals done in January unless you want to be taken for a fool and pay over the odds.

We’ve got a fantastic squad full of exciting talent, and a number of academy products coming through with some genuine potential.

I know a lot of folk seem to like the idea that behind the scenes were doomed…. But we’re actually not, we’re probably one of the most stable clubs in the league.

We need an extra body at the back. Evans will get injured again, Soyuncu will get injured again, Fofana will get injured again, Vestergaard has about 14% efficacy & we can't make Amartey play every available minute.

The sad reality is an upper championship level centre back would be an improvement at the minute so we need a loan.

The Vestergaard signing has rinsed us and it hasn't been anywhere near worth it, thanks Móngerton.

Virgil Van Dijk by a country mile.

I'd say VVD was a more important signing than Bruno Fernandes in the broader context of the Premier League. He's the bedrock on which Liverpool turned a corner and turned in to legitimate title challengers.

But I'd say Bruno Fernandes is possibly the more significant "mid-season" signing. He almost single headedly took them from what was going to quite blatantly be about a 9th/10th place finish to consecutive Champions League finishes, including in the season he joined. The uptick in their results (spearheaded by his contributions) after he arrived saved their season and probably kept Ole in a job.

By contrast, Liverpool were 4th when VVD signed and 4th at the end of the year. I'd say they really started to benefit from his transfer in earnest the following season when he started in great form with Gomez.

lol

I think we're best off just muddling through, this season is basically a write off anyway. Soy, Amartey and Vesty as the main boys and if someone has to come in to cover at cb then make do.

My worry would be that loan signings seem to come with strings attached, if we end up with another useless player that we don't want to play because we're then obligated to sign them after "x appearances". Just play a kid or Ndidi/Chouds at the back. Bringing in someone wouldn't be as a first choice so we're unlikely to get a bench warmer moving for 5 months to warm our bench

I’m more concerned with getting our injured and Afcon players back than with signing anyone new.

However, I do expect one or two loan deals to be made late in the window if the injury situation at that time still demands it.

All being well, Justin and Fofana will be like having new signings anyway.

We just have to grow a pair and not take on any stupid clauses.

The amount of fixture congestion will mean loads of games 3 or 4 days apart and with our track record we'll knacker whichever CBs we have available. I'd imagine any player returning from a muscle/ligament injury will be shitting themselves they'll get injured again. Somebody like Joe Rodon (random example) on loan means we're not playing somebody out of position when invariably we're down to the barebones again.

I think you've bigged it up a bit much. Man United were 6 points off 4th when they signed Fernandes with 14 games to go but they only really got 4th because we shit ourselves.

Plus Liverpool or Man United didn't sign those players just to be brilliant for 6 months, they bought them to be brilliant for the lengths of their contracts.

The year after Liverpool signed Van Dijk (18/19) they won the Champions League and got 97 PL points with Van Dijk being named player of the year and the year after that the won the league.

Yeah absolutely. I agree with that entirely.

My point was that, if it's "best signing made in January" then yeah, VVD. But if it's best January Signing the answers like Huth or Bruno probably had more impact in the season they joined.

I know it’s a different sport but it’s just what Tigers did for a couple of seasons when finishing second bottom. Desperate to avoid relegation they signed loads of journeymen types who were Vestergaard types of business, where u believe that if they’ve played so many games for another team they must be good.  Then covid came and relegation was scrapped. Borthwick is able to play the kids and see what they offer and the rest is history. A players CV has conned plenty of managers over the years into thinking the player must be okay.  Sometimes the answers to your problems are very close.

.. Borthwick brought in a lot of quality especially from South Africa!!!

The Tigers academy has always been a place of excellence, as they were winning trophies while the first team struggled.

Geordan Murphy was instrumental in blooding the youngsters and the fact that relegation was cancelled for a season, allowed us to integrate the academy players to see what they were made of.

We now have a first class team, full of grit and belief and also stocked with a good deal of academy players that has made the grade.

We had tried to bring in experience and know how but nearly brought the club to its knees.

You are only going to get where you want to, when you are a team, and not a club with people pulling in different directions.

In this ideal dream world where we get in decent cover all on our terms, then I'm with you to be fair.

I just find it hard to believe that we'd find someone who's good enough to be playing for us, who will want to come and sit on our bench/wait for an injury. Then if we find this player, having them and their club to just let us have the loan with no strings attached.

Personally don't see who we get in that's good enough (thus worth bringing in) with their club being happy to let him come to us without trying to shaft us.

With Castange out Big Dan will have to help cover at right back which leaves us with Cags and Vestergaard at CB unless, we play Ndidi or Hamza out of position. Evans and Fonfana won't be back any time soon.

Vestergard is a championship level player so he is already in position.

With Castagne out for 8-9 weeks, I'd be gobsmacked if we didn't bring in a defender or two on loan or permanent. There must be an out of favour European defender at a big club who we can take on loan.

Genuine question, who would be the best ever January signing, Premier League not just Leicester, since the January transfer window was introduced?

The only two nominations I can think of are Huth for us and Bruno at Man Utd. Any other suggestions?

Mahrez must figure up there, although technically we were in the Champ at the time, for just the last half of the season.

Probably another chance we’ve blown to sign someone and make something good out of the season. At least we get free lukewarm beer though
