A monument designed as an ‘eternal tribute’ to Leicester City's former chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha has been given the go-ahead. The statue, which will be set within an area of reflection for fans, will be erected at King Power Stadium.

Leicester City Council has today approved the football club’s designs for a statue and seating area commemorating Khun Vichai, who lost his life, alongside four other people, in a helicopter crash outside the grounds in 2018. An inscription around the base of the statue will read ‘Always in our hearts’.

The monument will be sited to the north of the King Power Stadium, where it will be visible from Raw Dykes Road and close to the main entrance to the West Stand and where the players and VIP guests arrive. The statue will be encircled by four planters and benches, designed to ‘stress the importance’ of the monument, ‘bring a natural softness to the area’ and allow visitors a place to ‘sit, dwell and reflect’.

Council planning officers praised the new design for the monument, saying the seating would make it more inclusive for the fans who wish to pay tribute. A set of plans were previously put to the council in 2020 for a statue which would have been slightly smaller and would not have included the planters and benches.

Khun Vichai’s son, Khun Aiyawatt, made a commitment to creating the memorial in the days following the helicopter tragedy, and the club said, when the plans were revealed, that the statue would be "an eternal tribute to the most influential figure in Leicester City’s 138-year history".

Leicester City chief executive Susan Whelan said when the plans were revealed: “We are very pleased to be sharing this news with our supporters, with the city of Leicester and with football fans all over the world, whose kindness in the wake of Khun Vichai’s passing demonstrated what an inspiration he was to so many people.

The statue will stand in a prominent location outside the King Power Stadium

“Khun Vichai’s contribution to this club and this city – his vision, his generosity and his belief in people – are immortalised in the memory of every person touched by our story. The statue will be a place for people to remember, to celebrate his life and to share those stories for generations to come.”

Other details revealed in the planning application show the planters will also contain spotlights focused on the statue ‘to create a dramatic setting' and ensure it is visible at winter games. The statue itself will be 2.7 metres high, standing on a 2.5 metre blue marble plinth, bearing the Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha Foundation logo, the club charity named in the late owner's honour, bringing it to 5.2 metres.

On a serious note I just hope it’s not shit. Really should honor the great man. If it’s Ronaldo on Madeira levels we should topple it

Was gonna say there have been a couple of really terrible ones produced lately. Don't mention it on here though if it's no good, will get a grilling from Chocolate's army.

I don't think that you should be criticised. For me the Vichai statue should have been at the memorial. The corner statue had to be of Wes and Claudio lifting the trophy or that image of Mahrez on Vardy's shoulders.

As for pictures,  they make me cringe a little bit now because it's all brand and owners.

We won the Championship, Premier League and FA Cup. The whole stadium should be a big celebration of what the club have achieved on the pitch, ramming it down the throat of anyone who comes near the stadium.

Memorial for contemplation and reflection. Stadium for celebration.

Get your hard hat on mate.
