How fast can you run a 5k?

Recommended Posts

My times for this have inched back to 6:30ish per K, as I’m 40 and only running once a week now.

I’m playing no football either.

I did debate signing up to that football V fat thing, it’s getting that bad 😂

Bit of hot weather training, did a 5k whilst on my holiday in Turkey this morning.

Went OK but wanted a drink after about 30 seconds - the atmosphere must be really, really dry.

New watch worked fine as well, so goodbye s***bit, you won't be missed

I use a Fitbit for running…. What issues did you have?

Enjoy Turkey!

Thank you kindly, I've never been before and it's great.

I had a Charge 4, which I shouldn't complain too much about as it was a freebie from my wife that she gave me when she decided immediately she wanted something better.

You couldn't read the display in daylight (common fault) the GPS would regularly fail after about 15 minutes meaning runs were never recorded properly (common fault) if at all and last week the bit that the strap fixes to on the watch itself broke off (common fault).

If it had worked properly as designed it would have been perfect! I've bought a Garmin which is probably a bit flasher than I really need but it's the previous generation one so wasn't crazy money in the Prime sale

About 20 days. Takes me a lot of effort to leg it anywhere these days.

I do have Adidas trainers and some lycra pants, just to "fit in".

Sorry. This is clearly a serious thread for folks on here.

Ah…. Yeah…. I had an older Fitbit and you could see nada!

Have the charge 5 which addresses that…. Never had an issue with the GPS so far…

Garmin are the daddy I understand!  I had a requirement for something discrete on my opposite wrist as I always wear a normal watch as well (yeah a two watch w@nker!)

Did my first run for years in May with 5km as my target. Completed it in 30:25.

Hated every second and didn't go again until two weeks ago, 30:03.

Hated that as well but thought I'd back it up with another one this time, which I did last week and ran 29:05. Felt slightly less like dying afterwards, so maybe it's true that it does get easier the more you do it.

As a (nearly) 31 year old who doesn't exercise other than when playing golf, I think that's okay. I think I should run for my mental and cardiovascular health, and I'm intrigued to see what time I can get down to with a good few months of building up my fitness. At the same time I absolutely hate it, so let's see.

Trust me, it’s worth doing a few times a week.

I detest it with a passion, however l always feel better once it’s done.

Massive drop off in my fitness levels over the past 10 years though. The 30 - 49 decline has been rough :dunno:

Did my first run today since I got legged by skinheads with knives in the Eighties. Enjoyed it tbh, despite needing to frequently walk and split infinitives - so much so, I'm going to splash out on shoes tomorrow and not do it again in walking boots. People don't run in walking boots, right?

Invest in a decent pair of Asics.

Incredible trainers. I wear a pair to do my deliveries everyday as I walk a lot of miles.

Saucony and New Balance are worth looking at too.

Don't be tempted by anything that looks cool, the vast majority of Nike's are fashion shoes and won't do the job.

As someone who is renown for his cool and fashion sense, you have no idea how much this disappoints me.

I've had a lot of jobs, and at the risk of sounding like a geek, I was footwear manager at JJB Fosse Park about 20 years ago.

We used to get people in preparing for marathons and wanting a pair of Air Max 90's to do it in lol

I used to get them on the treadmill with what they wanted, then told them to try the Asics.

Not one person bought the Nike's. A couple even bought the treadmill!

Shop around and get a pair from last year's range at decent discount.

They're not cheap, but if you're serious about it, your feet are worth looking after. You can get horrendous ankle, knee, hip, back problems with the wrong footwear.

And know how to tie them up. That weird hole right at the top of the trainer is there for a reason, the lace lock will change your life! :D

Where are you? The Running Fox in Loughborough is a really good shop (well it was, anyway). Like Tom says, go somewhere where they can watch you run a bit and do gait analysis, as that might determine what shoes are best for you.

It can get expensive, but a decent pair can last for years. You get folk saying you have to change them every X number of miles but I think that's industry bollocks. I bought two identical pairs of Adidas Supernova about 8 years ago and I only swapped into the second pair in the last year after wearing the others regularly and you couldn't tell the difference

Have a butchers above.

IF your proper serious get your gait analysed to see how you run, overpronate, neutral etc.

You can YouTube how to do this at home, using paper and wetting your feet.

I've used asics, new balance and Reebok- all do great running trainers.

A very easy way to get an idea if you over or underpronate is to look at a pair of shoes you've worn to death.

Looking at the heel, from behind, has one side worn away a lot more than the other?

Asics specialise in stuff like this by using a harder compound rubber on one side of the sole to help correct it.

It's not just as simple as that though. It's actually very technical and incredibly interesting, if you're a nerd, like me 🤓

Here’s how fashion conscious I am - I’ve no idea what Air Max 90s are without resorting to Google.

I’m aware of Gautier and Primark - do one of them make those?

I’m not proper serious mate. I’m going to start doing the whole running thing but cycling is where I spend cash.

These are my Asics. Probably about 2 years old now. Got them for about 90 quid, but RRP was closer to £150

They're a bit battered, I do around 16k steps a day, but they are worth their weight in gold to me.

I don't even run in them, I'm like one of those weird speed walkers you laugh at in the Olympics every 4 years lol

A friend who no longer posts here has recommended Hokas or Altras to me as I have big fat wide Hobbit feet with plantars in my left foot.
