Of course, there are many other occasions where they’ve played the victim without any references to Hillsborough

I think this victim, City of self pity without dignity image has mostly been created by the media, especially the BBC. It's been going on for decades where they revel in playing up the poor community thing everytime something bad happens as if, some how, it's worse for them than anywhere else. The latest is a good example. I don't doubt that Liverpool fans were treated very badly in Paris but then over the past years other sets of fans have had equally appalling treatment at the hands of Euro police forces. However, they don't get the media coverage that Liverpool do. I can't imagine a top level investigation being launched if it was any other fans.

I've never felt the need to sing the feed the scousers song but I suspect that it only continues because they rise to it. Remember one of the songs of the 70's, in your Liverpool slums? That wasn't very pleasant either but it didn't get this sort of reaction (probably as no social media) so faded away.

In answer to the question, Liverpool became toxic to me since an incident outside Villa Park in the '74 Cup semi final coupled with the media Liverpool love-in since every time they smashed up Leicester.

Blimey, I'm getting a right kicking here!

I will happily and gleefully sing inappropriate songs and will continue to do so, mainly about scousers.

I'm also a paid up member of the Tory party, so double kicking. Although I may add a proper conservative, not like this wet shower at moment. But heyho, I keep my membership so I can vote in the leader elections.

Love you all! No matter your politics or views!

Back in topic, out of the three historically we’ve only really had any off field bother with Chelsea. That’s why we sing about them running away on Boxing Day.

It’s all about stereotypes isn’t it? The image that comes to mind of a ‘Liverpool fan’ is of a ratty little scouser who‘ll nick your alloys then bleat on about how it’s ‘everyone else’s fault’.

A Spurs fan is someone giving it the fackin big un, dressed up in his Burberry or Stone Island.
Whilst a West Ham fan will be like a Spurs fan, just with less money and an even more pronounced (fake) Cockney accent.

All of which of course is utter bollox but I’ve always found it fascinating how stereotypes develop and then get prolonged/recreated.
I don’t really know why but I have a real disdain for Arsenal and it’s fans. The stereotype I have of this bunch is a load of corporates, eating prawn sandwiches, not really arsed about football but moaning that ‘it’s not like it was when we had the invincibles.’
Perhaps this image is the most accurate one?

Then I went to Sunderland away in April 2016. We were on the finishing straight, really closing in on the title and starting to believe. Not only were their fans superb to us, really friendly, chatty, welcoming before the game but after we beat them two nil and piled on their relegation woes whilst deliriously celebrating another step towards a title that must have inspired envy in some of them, they stood up and applauded.

Didn't just applaud us in the ground, as our coaches pulled out of the Stadium of Light and started heading home they were in the streets, outside pubs, chip shops, bars, all the way out of the city they stood and applauded as the coaches went by. I've never seen anything like it, it was completely nuts.

That really was THE game when it all became real.

Still gives me tingles...

Any old boys who where there prepared to risk online cancelling with a skinhead story?

I was a nipper at the time, got a general jostling when they ran into our end and couldnt really see what happened when they got chased out.

Spurs might have a longer history but the argy bargy at Villa Park was not our proudest moment and may have put their backs up.

West Ham? Sure there was always trouble with those buggers but modern day rivalry, why?

Liverpool....... have some swapped black humour for self pity? Are those hidden middle class sensitivities peeking through?

Not sure I would like to generalise based on a few social media comments , however, I will ask the above of the next Scouse taxi driver I get.....

Nah, there's been alot of bother with Spurs stretching right back to the 80s . Even during to 90s when it seemed to quieten down it would still always kick off with Spurs . To be fair Chelsea was a little bit worse. 😅

We've got a thread called "do they mean us?" where saddos dig through every opposition forum and get appalled at any comment made about us. It works both ways so not really a surprise more "rivalries" have sprouted up as people are finding them out of nowhere.

There's something innate about rivalries. In the animal world the same species will readily, in their clans, kill each other over territory. You can see it happening in Ukraine now.

Football rivalry is a sublimated version of the real thing. It's mostly young lads needing to express natural aggressive tendencies. It's relatively harmless (except where the various firms organise a punch up off field).

My father-in-law was a Liverpool supporter but he grew up in the 1920s. He spoke of the appreciation most fans would express for the opposition for the good play they exhibited. It got toxic at about the time I started going to City games (yes - it was me ) - late sixties. But that was also the time when Mods and Rockers were kicking the hell out of each other on Brighton Beach.

What I remember was that I loved football at that time - I could name every player of about nine different clubs. I particularly admired Everton ffs! I only loathed Liverpool because they monopolised winning for thirty years. Now they've served their penance I can admire the team. I even cheered when I found out Forest had got back into the Prem. That'll (secretly) please some of our Forest 'haters' who'll already be thinking of thinking of ways to refresh the aggro when they turn up at the KP.

I think envy is involved to some extent but mostly it's down to that something deep in the mostly male psyche that needs to express its aggression on that suspicious looking stranger who's just sallied into our neighbourhood.

I recall an amusing story my Spurs -supporting mate told me. He was at a Spurs - Arsenal match sitting next to an Arsenal fan. About a hundred Chelsea fans had infiltrated that section of WHL. The Arsenal fan tapped my mate on the shoulder, asked v. politely if he could squeeze past and then proceeded to hurtle up to the Chelski fans to start laying into them! Perhaps it is just the Chelsea fans who're obnoxious.

We were already singing that song in the early 90s . But not long after the S*n did an article on how some Chelsea hooligans were members of the far right Combat 18 .

Half of Highfields turned up to Filbert Street.  I'll never forget the worried look on Chelsea fans faces when 30 massive " Rasta's" appeared staring at them from the South Stand .

I have a very personal dislike for Spurs which stems from the 99 League Cup final. Where at Wembley, as a 12 year old, I was subjected to horrendous verbal abuse from their fans even after they’d scored their late winner. I remember even at that age thinking ‘why are they more concerned about insulting a child than celebrating a late winner in a cup final??’ but there we have it.

You'd think I’d be over it but I’m not! One League Cup since to show for it since you c*nts, you defo should have focused on celebrating more😂😂

I told this  story the other week, I was sat at the bar infront of the TV,  in Earls Court and a dozen of their 'proper lads' sat behind me. I drank about 8 pints during the match and at some point my body language might have given me away....... one told me bad luck and it was not a penalty as they left.

No trouble at all, not like the time I got biffed in Hammersmith for congratulating Emile on a goal

Most of us will have grown up with Liverpool and United 'fans' so that's possibly the biggest reason. The 'this means more' stuff from Liverpool also really annoys me, and they're a thuggish team that get decisions going their way constantly.

United are shit now so I care a lot less about them.

West Ham I didn't even realise we have a rivalry with. And the Spurs stuff we should really let go especially as we actually beat them to the league.
