I’m very excited to watch a team with a chance versus what we’ve been served up for months now. Should also be pretty fun to take over a few US cities 🤩

However, players covering their mouths during friendly conversations with opposition players will not be punished. Referees will now use a visible five-second countdown for throw-ins and goal-kicks. If a throw-in is not taken before the countdown expires, possession will be awarded to the opposition. Players being substituted will also now have just 10 seconds to leave the pitch after the substitution board has been shown and must exit using the nearest point on the boundary line. If a player fails to leave within the time limit, their replacement will only be allowed onto the pitch at the first stoppage after one minute has elapsed following the restart. Outfield players who receive treatment from medical staff on the pitch will now be required to remain off the field for at least one minute after play restarts. Exceptions will apply in cases involving goalkeeper injuries, collisions, head injuries, concussions or situations where the injured player is due to take a penalty. There will also now be a mandatory three-minute hydration break in each half during every World Cup match, with referees given flexibility over when the stoppage takes place depending on injuries or the flow of the game. 1

Quote Collina said all nations should be aware this is now not permitted. "We had a workshop with all the coaches of all the 48 teams and we told them that referees will be proactive," Collina said. "They will not allow the two teams to go to the benches when a goalkeeper is lying on the ground injured. Finally! Something is being done about it.... Something is being done about it.... Ah. The same should happen with water breaks. Neutrals should take water, cold towels, energy gels etc into the centre circle where players can cool themselves down. Should never be used as a tactical break. It drastically affects how games are played.

Which makes me think these new rules won’t be enforced unless there is a ridiculous example of time wasting. Anyone subbed off is supposed to go off at the nearest point in theory but against doesn’t always happen . The keeper goes down pretending to be injury to allow tactical team talks is an issue but then just add the time on at the end as normal ? Edited 1 June by Super_horns

The issue is having a tactical team talk as opposed to it being a time issue. Arteta is ridiculous for it. He'll have a message for his whole team and a change in tactics so he tells Raya to sit on his arse for 2 minutes while he has a cold compress put on his neck and he gets the opportunity to address his whole team and to tweak anything that may have a risen from the oppositions substitutes. It's completely wrong and in my view is cheating. 2
