I don’t think he’s lost desire. He has had a major personal bereavement which is bound to change him. Perhaps Top is a different person now he’s lost his father, in the circumstances he did.

Tops biggest downfall is that he has surrounded himself with idiots. Rudkin is the master of our downfall, but I don’t think Top can see anything wrong with him.

Wise words. A  major personal bereavement can have devastating effects on someone, including suddenly realising that all life's struggles will ultimately turn to dust. This can cause complete loss of drive and ambition in life generally, and everything then seems pointless and empty.

Having said that, there's also perhaps a feeling within the club generally that the twin goals of winning the PL and FAC have finally been achieved, so the desire to go for glory again has lost some of its appeal. If my life's ambition were to climb Everest, would I then want to climb it again? Definitely not - too much effort would be needed, both physical and mental.

I just looked at the out of contract list for the summer and I got REAL concerned. We NEED to get recruitment right this summer and seeing names like Ryan Kent, Tom Davies, Nathan Redmond, Jesse Lingard, Ross Barkley and Jeff Schlupp has put some ice in my veins.

I’m seriously concerned. If we manage to sell Madders and Barnes for a combined £100 million - big If, we would have the financial resources to buy in what we need. We will lose a number of players. Those remaining are not what you need in the championship- mostly.

I also don’t think Smith is the man for the job, but I hear he likely will be if and when we are relegated. I hope this isn’t the case. I don’t feel he has what it takes to bring us back up.

my own personal feeling is that we will be lucky to finish mid table. As always, I hope I’m wrong.

Is the Smith staying on thing from a reliable source?

I think if we got relegated it'd be one of the most disastrous in the PL era, up there with the very worst - given the level of talent we have in our side.

I do think if we have another few windows like the last then we'll force ourselves into the mix but I'd be gobsmacked if we came down. The fact we played anywhere near our potential about 4 times last season in the league and came 8th sums up how bad we actually have to be to manage to drop. Even on off days we're often bailed out by attacking quality.

If the club think they’re getting 100m for madders and Barnes then it makes sense that they’d decide to keep smith - they are the most deluded leadership in the  PL and likely EFL too ….

I think as a squad we've got enough to do well in the championship, even losing the amount of players we are. The problem is the hierarchy. Top, Rudkin et al scare me because they're all so shit at their jobs. Vichai pulled out master strokes with Pearson and Ranieri. Top will probably stick with Smith, who looked ok on paper, but in reality looks clueless too.

So we are playing in Singapore, 5 days before the championship season starts??

Liverpool FC will return to Singapore for their pre-season tour this summer, after a hugely successful visit last year.

The Reds will face Leicester City and Bayern Munich as part of the Singapore Festival of Football.

First up will be Leicester at the National Stadium in Singapore on Sunday July 30

We're asking a club, which has spectacularly messed up recruitment for the last 2 years, to sell and replace up to approx 18 players. And all with a manager who will have never managed us for a competitive game.

We can't even field an 11, let alone a bench

(I haven't accounted for youth players because I don't know enough there)

What about 9th, 5th, 5th and 8th screams relegation? I know there's more to look at than just league positions in previous years but nothing about last season screams relegation. Especially considering this thread was created before we sold two first choice players. All they had to go off was a lack of signings (to add to the team that again I'll remind you finished 8th) and probably their vendetta against Rodgers which they have probably held since freakishly early. We also ended the season well, don't care whether Watford/Southampton and Norwich were amongst the opposition. Signs may have existed that showed we'd not really be competing for Europe, maybe a boring mid-table finish at worst but no, even those who muttered the words relegation before this season started must admit that this season has gone worse than they ever imagined.

love to quote myself being right, but that underlying stats and the performances were very concerning and I said it multiple times last summer and at the end of last season:

I can't really be bothered to read 9 pages, but it is a legitimate fear. The table based on expected points last season (basically, an expression of points based on expected goals) had us 15th, ahead of only the three relegated clubs, Newcastle and wolves (and the latter two only because we really padded our stats in the last three games, filter them out and it's 17th). We ran incredibly hot in front of goal last season (no side outperformed their xG by more than we did) but that does mask a few problems and relies basically on Maddison still having a point to prove to Southgate, an increasingly aging Vardy staying fit and clinical and where he's not fit, Daka and Iheanacho stepping up.

Basically, we massively overperformed in attack and defence last season based on the chances we created and chances we gave up. That isn't exactly sustainable and we need to improve all-round play or we will slowly be dragged down into relegation battles and have a Southampton esque trajectory

did I expect it to go this bad this quick? no, I was expecting us to bin Rodgers off in October after a poor start and would recover to about 12th-14th, but the board neglecting their duty of care to the club and leaving Rodgers in charge left a relegation scrap inevitable
