To all those who complained at people being upset at us finishing 8th..

To be fair missing European football didn’t overly affect us in the aftermath of the CL run. We still spent then continually.

Three things now which are either fortunate or could be better managed

1) Covid vastly reduces income for the club and the owners

2) We chased CL and never let go of a player to fund the transfer budget. We did that really well on numerous occasions.

3) We’ve gonna sign a load of average to poor chuff on big wages. We did it before but we could mix that up with a few honest pros from the PL winning squad.

Unless they are represented by Harry Kane's agent, in which case they definitely won't lose them. Maybe we should see if Fofana is keen to work with him?

I despise everything regarding Spurs but Kane's commitment to that team is almost up there with Vardy's. I'm under the impression he's emotionally attached to Spurs and I like it despite last summer's rumours.

Bit puzzled by that view given he’s very publicly twice made transfer requests but he was locked into a long term contract and just expected them to let him go

To put it into context.

We earnt roughly 14m from the season we were in the Europa League with no fans, Kasper wages were roughly 7m.

Last season with fans we may have pushed maybe 18m with having fans back.

I'm sure we would have had to pay some bonus to the squad for achieving Europe football, so probably shaves a couple million off.

Whilst useful to have I'm not sure it was, make or break.

I'm not disagreeing with your point as I don't know ins and outs of our finances, but why am I now constantly seeing we can't afford players at the club? Even when people suggest "we sign 3 players" other posters will reply with "that will bloat the finances/squad even more". I just don't get it.

We've been in the PL for 5+ seasons now, a league that is rich in money, we've won it and won the FA Cup as well as playing in Europe yet I constantly see we can't afford new players?

Are things that bad in terms of us paying stupidly high wages to our players?

UEFA's FFP rules are going to change in 2025. You can only spend up to 70% of your revenue on wages, transfers and agents' fees.

Not certain on our current percentage but I believe we're at 105%.

The club is getting ready for when that hits. Also, we have 27 first team players so there isn't space for new signings unless we sell players, we're not rich enough to let players sit in the reserves all year. Especially considering all but 2 of them are 23 or older.

We've got a bloated squad, a focus on signing 4/5 back up players rather than 1/2 starting players in the last few windows has resulted in this position where the 1st team is in desperate need of a refresh and the squad players are still happy to sit here and pick up a wage because that's all they ever signed to do.

Soyuncu, Tielemans, Amartey, Evans, Kasper, Vardy, Perez, Mendy, Hamza and Bertrand are out of contract next summer. Ideally they'll be replaced by 3/4 players ready to play in the fist team rather than replacing backup for backup again.

And how about this ecxact same thing happening almost every year for the last 5/6 years, including when we finished 5th twice? In fact, last year was the only year in our "recent post PL win" history where we didn't sell a key player.

Exactly.

Even after we won the league we lost Kante.

No chance. He’s publicly admitted wanting to leave. He’s either unambitious and lazy or Levy has run rings around his brother/agent in tying him into a long term deal and refusing to sell. Probably both

I don't know, probably I still like to believe there are players out there loving to bits their team, fans etc.

It’s 90% this year and 80% the following.

no one has crossed the line yet so cannot know what the actual sanctions would be - there is a list but I bet they’d love to make an example of an English club !

the aim this season is to qualify for European football. Imagine finishing 4th and then being demoted to the Europa league because of breaking the 90% rule.  These changes revealed in April - that was seriously crappy for us.

completely agreed. Personally don’t believe mouth breathing horse face is one of them. But then again I despise him so I would say that

that’s an odd interpretation of what I’ve said. I’ve simply said that now people can see why people were upset when we finished 8th- it’s going to cost us with top player wanting to leave.

These top players will all leave at some point, but as I said in my first post, maintaining the ability to get European Football in the Premier League is difficult, ourselves & West Ham managed to break the mould, but you thoroughly expect the “Big Six” to kick on further again, leaving the likes of ourselves & West Ham facing consequences of losing our best players in the future.

We’ve lost Mahrez, Maguire & Chilwell in the past, in the future we’ll lose Tielemans, Fofana & Maddison, that’s part and parcel of being a team like Leicester City.

Whether it be this summer, next summer, the summer after that, we are bound to lose the likes of Fofana & Maddison at some point, some fans just need to face up to that reality.

I said the other day that you're witnessing the downfall, everyone laughed haha.

Buzzing for a bit of Bristol City away next season.

That would be an awesome cup draw!

There is NO plus side to not being in Europe. Teams from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Bosnia, Armenia, Kosovo and many other disparate countries qualify, and I want to go to them! West Ham could be going to Faroe Islands for their qualifier, so lucky

You can still go to those places

Well, Kasper for one.

sounds like we will  for the others if we get the right offers lol

and , for someone like maddison I doubt we will let him run down his contract, so I’m sure we are at least considering it too if he’s indicating he won’t sign an extension..

If this were to happen do you really think it could be averted by qualifying for Europa League?  Do you think Tielemans for instance would be persuaded to stay?  I think he wants CL.

If big clubs come in for players, ie Chelsea for Fofana they will want to go regardless of whether we're in Europa League or not, just like Kante, Mahrez, Drinky, Maguire and Chilwell have done.

The problems we have with players is down to some ropey recent recruitment, over-generous contracts and allowing players to run their contracts down.

100% this.

It can be corrected, the theory is solid and works. As a club we do tend to learn from mistakes, so I can't imagine we'll be throwing millions a year on players that aren't going to be playing again. We'll hopefully be more intelligent with the contracts we put together. Perform well and you'll be well remunerated. Contribute little and you'll earn little.

The two Champions League misses were sliding doors moments. You can only be annoyed about our inability to keep Tielemans, our lack of activity this summer and ultimately our slide back to a mid to lower Premier League side if you were annoyed when we screwed up those opportunities.

We’ll soon be in the position where to have a chance at getting top 4 or regular European football would require fresh investment/ownership.
