Can't see them doing anything to help really

A well insulated new build, with an aircon unit would feel very pleasant this coming week.

Over 30 in may, over 35 in June.

We never saw these temperatures when I was a kid.

A few years ago these were July and August temperatures.

40 wasn't supposed to happen for decades even under extreme climate models yet happened a couple of years ago.

Might not be far off that in June this year!

And el nino won't be felt until winter and next summer.

Yeah, I had one. It was really good to be fair, if not a little noisy. I didn’t properly fit the pipe (think tumble drier through wall job) so I had it draped out of the window. It would easily take a room from ~30c down to 22c in an hour and wasn’t overly expensive to run, as it isn’t constantly running the compressor.

Believe me, walking from the hallway which was ~30c into a 22c room felt like walking into a fridge!

I have a portable thing. It'll basically make one room livable. Kinda disappointed it doesnt make actually cold and the area covered is pretty small. But better than nowt. Might look at the cost of a proper wall mounted unit.

Yeah, they’re good for a “normal” sized room, assuming you’ve shut the doors and closed it off. The running cost of a fixed unit is actually quite a lot better, I believe. Much quieter too.

In fairness, I hate the look of radiators as much as the AC units, so i have sympathy.

We have been installing ceiling fans like these in every room as we decorate and they make a huge difference. We prefer the ones without the exposed blades as they look less 1980s but they are really handy and not expensive.

We had these and replaced them with the ones with exposed blades, they didn't really seem to do a lot

Ours work well. Should have one in every room by the time we are done.

Yeah we had them in all our rooms at one time, but found they weren't a patch on the traditional ones, hence why we've since removed them and gone back to exposed blade types. We found they were ok if you were directly under them, but they weren't great at moving the air around them.

can't get a decently priced portable air conditioner anywhere atm.

Going to die this week

I recommend foil survival blankets stuck to the outside of your windows to reflect away the heat. Cheap.

Screwfix sell an 18 inch floor standing fan. It’s amazing and if you can direct it at you in the night it makes sleeping in this heat bearable.

Looking forward to seeing reports on the number of excess deaths there were during the heatwave coming out and people on Facebook saying no, there definitely weren't any

Oh I've already seen that one today, with it's general 'and it was completely fine' vibe. In fairness, the majority of the replies are people telling them not to be an idiot

Got to love a good bit of survivorship bias.

Especially when a lot of lives and health and economic stability is at stake.

Ah 1976. Met my future wife on the 18th June. I was feeling very pleased with myself for meeting such a cracker. Odd thing I remember the following day the Lords Test with the West Indies was washed out on the Saturday. Last bit of rain for ages. For me it was sunny in more ways than one as the summer progressed

Just woke from my third mini kip of the day.

I can't function in this heat and just want to sleep all day.
