Ongoing search in Syston for a teenager who entered into one of the lakes. Doesn’t sound like it’ll be a good outcome.

Yeah helicopter circling and saw the underwater search team van pull in about an hour ago

There’s a certain age group that when discussing the extreme weather they always compare it to surviving the war.. now I’m fairly certain said age group weren’t alive for the war..

When we were growing up we had the public information cartoons/short films  (which included dangers of large areas of open water )

Back then everyone watched the tv so everyone saw them

By about 8pm there was a lovely cool breeze so with the windows wide open it was a comfortable night.

I put the windows down, I thought that if I really must drive my car last night it's preferable to air con, although I couldn't smell the air freshener which has a lovely hint of Norwegian wood. During the day though, when the temperature gets this hot you won't see me, I'll be nowhere man.

It's important to think for yourself, but so many listen to dodgy advice on the internet. Apparently, the word is, put a bowl of cold water on your window sill at night. My younger sister Michelle tried it. I sometimes wonder what goes on in her head, the stupid girl. The window that I'm now looking though, you would think might benefit from that, but there's a decent breeze anyway. In my life, I've never experienced two heatwaves like these within the space of a few weeks, I guess we'll have to wait and see how quickly things deteriorate. If I needed someone to install air conditioning I might consult a specialist firm. There aren't many options left for those in equatorial latitudes, whilst those in coastal regions - run for your life.

I sometimes put a candle on the window sill on really cold winter nights. Works quite well warming rooms up I find

My 16 year old has never had any of those.

I was born in the late 80s and I only know of them as my parents spoke to me about them. I remember it being drilled into me from a very young age not to go over any fence to get close to quarry holes as they were dangerous and always told not to go into lakes and ponds. I was in France once and playing in a river on a school trip and got into trouble and it scared the shit out of me. We were fully life jacketed up, and I aint a bad swimmer, but i couldnt beat this current and couldnt get my legs going and it was terrifying enough I tell both my kids not to play in rivers or water that isnt a swimming pool or only about waist high in the sea if its calm and the flags allow it.

I may he over protective or over sensitive, but i am terrified of open water for reasons like this with these people getting into trouble and going missing and 99/100 drowning.

In the 70s you couldn't even go into a swimming pool cos Rolf Harris was there

Yes he did one of the info films in a swimming pool - I think was a pretty basic one about learning to swim

I believe that in Spain etc, schools start and finish earlier during the summer months @FoxesDeb

Here the schools have already finished for summer, and won't reopen until September.

People these days think they know better and take objection to the government, or any authority body, telling them what to do.

Yep, infuriating.

All you see is

’Well we did it when we were kids and it was fine’

’The problem is young people today don’t know how to swim’

Probably in many cases from the ‘I survived 1976 so climate change isn’t real’ mindset!

My daughter is 3 and a half. We’ve had her in swimming lessons since 6 months old (ok the early days was more water confidence than lessons) but already she is able to now swim short distances without any support or floatation aids, completely on her own. She’s on course to be an excellent swimmer as she gets older if she sticks with it. And guess what, we will take exactly the same approach as @ramboacdc further up this page in terms of drilling these messages in.

Of course being a strong swimmer can’t hurt, but people completely missing the point that if you get trapped on something or the cold water shock is indiscriminate as to whether you are the best swimmer or not.
