We were in credit when the gas and electric bills came last month. Today we've been told our monthly payment has tripled to £400 a month. We simply can't afford to put the heating on. Looks like some savings will have to be made, my City season ticket looks unsustainable.

Like Tommy said, that cant be right surely

I got told by chaps at gas board (when Eon decided my gas meter wasn't safe - which it is) to not get a smart meter for gas, as it can cut out and cut supply to the home.

I'm missing mine already.

Never been bothered about it before (apart from enjoying avoiding the ballache of submitting readings myself), but I've been watching the readouts and usage on the provider website every day for the last couple of months.

From it, I know that we're going to get through it in reasonable shape. Don't like the idea of waiting for a bill to find out what's going on

My daily smart reader states a joint amount for G&E of approx  £7.50!

When ibwak IP at 6 it already about 90p and nothings even been on!

Presume its SC.

I rang them up months ago about it and they literally stated" it's just a guide"

On this basis per month in the colder says I'd be paying about £230 pcm.

Last months bill was -
Gas 18th Oct. 2022 - 17th Nov. 2022 £68.85 DR
Electricity 18th Oct. 2022 - 17th Nov. 2022 £69.78 DR

Total 110 ish

We're the same. Averaging about £7/8 per day. It's crazy. A few years back that was the once a year bill for Xmas day when we'd have the whole family over, CH on all day, oven on for hours, and all the lights on. Now it's a regular occurrence and I've literally done everything I possibly can to keep the bills down such as fit smart TRVs, smart plugs, and motion sensors everywhere to ensure only rooms we're in get power and heat but still the bills are ridiculous. I'm really concerned about what's to come of the next few years. Obviously we've got a price rise in April and cuts to government subsidies beyond that. I genuinely think we'll be looking at the average household paying somewhere in the region of £4500-6000 per annum for fuel within the next two years which is pretty grim.

As bad and frustrating as it is I try and keep some perspective by thinking about those poor souls in Ukraine right now who have had loved ones murdered, family members abused, their homes destroyed, and on top of all of that now face a winter of far colder temperatures than we'll experience with no heat or light and literally only the clothes on their back to try and survive.

Our gas is at around £5 a day. Expecting that to increase this week with the cold that is forecast. The thing that concerns me is that we are on a 2021 fixed rate which is half the cap rate just announced, so whatever we pay will be double if not treble next winter!

Mind, could be saving for a few days. Virgin switch off our internet tomorrow and because they screwed up our disconnection, Sky aren't activating it until Monday. There is no manual on switch on our boiler, so desperately hoping the Hive website is correct, and the system will run without Wi-Fi.

You can only do what you can to go around switching things off, having shorter showers, only boil the water you want, use economy 7 for washing machine, dishwasher etc.

It'll only save you pounds.

In the long run  you do what you have to do to keep your family warm and comfortable.

I've got asthma  and pretty sure my 9 year old lad has too, I'm not going to freeze and trigger my asthma or his just to save the equivalent  wasted on a p1ss up in town.

Think were using somewhere around £15-£17 of gas an electric per day now.  And that is cutting down on the heating use.  Luckily we have around £1220 in credit on our account.

Interestingly though the charges on the smart meter display seem to be more than what the British Gas App is saying we have used.  Strange.  Anyone else have this?

We did for a few weeks. I think it was our electricity which, according to our smart meter display, was costing us nearly 51p/kWh!

The website showed the correct amount and the the guy I spoke to at BG, assured me we were not being charged that amount.

Display took a few days to correct itself though.

We’re currently spending about £4 a day in gas and our heating is always on - thermostat set to 19c, so not strictly always on, but keeping the house warm enough. The Hive app shows the boiler kicks in for about 3 hours daily. Does this mean my house is well insulated and my boilers efficient? For what it’s worth I think it’s well insulated and the boilers only two years old, I just think it’s quite a difference in cost compared to some posts in here.

What size house you got? Semi/ detached?

Above sounds pretty damn good if you've got heating on ALL through the day at 19c

Decent sized 3 bed semi, the house next door’s been empty for 6 months so assuming their heating’s off which would have a negative effect on our heat I’d guess.

After the palaver we had with our boiler 2-3 weeks ago, things seem to have settled and we can now gauge our daily/weekly usage for gas.

Electric fluctuates between £1.50-£2.25 per day (higher on weekends).

Gas fluctuates between £2-3.25 per day (again, higher on weekends).

Small 3-bed house, both work from home but our heating isn't on all day, it just kicks in when the sensor detects the room temp is lower than we've asked it to be. But the house generally has very good insulation and very thick carpets which retains the heat. Also doesn't take that long to heat up so we're not having to have it on for a long time to feel adequately warm.

Yes. We've got a smart meter which stated our gas went up to about £8 one day.

Checked our account online and it was nowhere near as such.

I bloody hope mine is wrong - saying I've spent £7 so far today on gas and electric. That's with the heating on at 16°c, a computer and a couple of lights. 2 bed end terrace (albeit not very well insulated) but that is still mental money as it is. I am dreading the April cap increase

Easily the most cost effective way as a student in your city. Really would look at getting on it.

The market has changed unfortunately with most agents / sites opting out of offering all inclusive packages.

Hardly makes a difference for who you go with at the moment, the cost for rent is eye-watering next year.

If i were you, i'd nip round, smooth open the back door, and turn it on full.

British Gas are installing our Smart meter in first week of Jan. I'm wondering if there's any point after reading the inaccuracy that some have found.

The actual usage should be correct, I’d have thought. You could take that and multiply it by the cost, which to be fair would be a pain in the arse. Yeah, I’m out :D

Thats exactly what they do. I work in housing.

Newcastle agree is a joke for rent. Especially with how saturated it is.

That's really decent tbh
