Can’t believe we won 4-0. However, we are doing something we’ve struggled to do consistently for 18 months - defend competently. Well done to the defence today.

This raises an interesting question. If Rodgers was backed properly with good defensive players, would we have achieved more? You could ask the same question about his stint at Liverpool too.

I'm not 100% sure what the situation is with our signings. We know Congerton was heavily involved, but some signings did not seem like Rodgers signings, Vestergaard never seemed like a fit for a high pressing team for example. Congerton took Lookman with him to Atalanta in Serie A, and they are top with Lookman playing really well for them. He signed Fofana, and Daka also looks good.

Many things are on Rodgers, our mental collapses and sometimes baffling substitutions (I still get nightmares from taking off Ihenacho off against Bournemouth during the Covid season), but as you say - with a good defence he can get a team scoring goals. Despite starting the day at the bottom of the table, we've won two games 4-0 now.

Did well the defence I felt, got the blocks in and made it difficult for them to really create good opportunities. It was the complete away performance

Great result and timing too with lots down the bottom picking up points this weekend and us having Man City next weekend. Certainly not out of the woods but the pack now looks congested and we look much more likely of picking up results.

real talk - can somebody tell me or point me to where I can find out how many goals per 90 we've conceded with and without Amartey on the pitch?

amartey-upset.gif

Not necessarily when he’s on the pitch, but…

Per90 stats when Daniel Amartey starts (PL 22/23):

xG conceded: 1.21

xG on target conceded: 0.95

Per90 stats when Daniel Amartey hasn’t started:

xG conceded: 1.96

xG on target conceded: 2.33

Near on perfect away performance.

The first half reminded me a lot of the Leeds match. We were second best but managed to defend our box well, then hit them with decisive counters.

I’m still concerned about a number of things, mainly the total lack of midfield control and low chance creation, but after conceding 22 goals in the first 7 matches we simply had to concentrate on improving our defence first and foremost. We’ve done that and managed to be decisive with what few chances we create.

After the WC hopefully we can get a bit more control in games, but with Man City (H), Everton (A) and West Ham (A) remaining I can imagine it will be more of the same.

No, simply because of nonsense sideways possession-based-Brendanball.

As for the claims he's shouts for them to pass forward :crylaugh: well....

It's been debated many times but I don't see how playing this way is conducive to positive play, all it does is invite pressure upon yourself whilst inevitably making a mistake of our own, allowing the opposition in.

It seems as if today we didn't play that way, most of our positive results - we havn't played that way.

I understand if a team is happy to sit behind the ball then options are limited but allow them to have more of the ball, if they're happy to sit behind the ball, chances are they aren't going to pose too much of a danger anyway in turn allowing us to pressure them alot more positively and alot more higher up the pitch - if not gaps open, either way.

Today seems and sounded like it was good.

I think it’s not because he wants us to play backwards/sideways, but it is on him to stop us defaulting to this if we feel uncertain/under pressure

Would of been interesting If wolves had scored first. Against better sides we need to stop giving away the ball so much. If we give man City 20 shots on goal it will be a blood bath.

Well it does a bit. Can't keep giving away so many chances. Especially in the first 10 minutes of a game

It’s a fair point, but teams may come out all guns blazing and sometimes, surviving this onslaught is the task before things settle, and we can establish our game

I agree with that. Fair play

At last an away clean sheet. Faes has made such a difference to the backline, Amartey looks noticeably more confident alongside him. Ward has grown in recent weeks, and not afraid to come for a cross. This week we’ve been great at winning the ball high up, and getting into dangerous areas quickly. After the first ten minutes today, we looked fairly solid. We scored some great goals. Still plenty to work on, and remain far from convinced by Rodgers, but he’s got it right the last two games and four clean sheets in five is significant. Subs have been much better recently. If he’s swallowed his pride a bit and changed his tactics up, then fair play

We played a poor team today. But good to see the defence getting better and better. Also confidence will start to come back after these 2 wins.

Now need to bring in some squad strength in depth players in the Jan transfer window. Need to challenge the established starting 11 players

That is utterly, utterly insane.

Does this mean we are winning the Premier League again next season? That's how we work right? We are absolutely awful at the back for ages, can't defend for months, then we create a title winning back 4 with cast-offs and underrated players.
