Leicester City will have more than a month without a competitive fixture after their game with West Ham a week on Saturday as the World Cup in Qatar takes centre stage

Leicester City’s World Cup plans include a training camp in Abu Dhabi as Brendan Rodgers looks to get his side in the best shape possible for the second half of the season.

In a unique campaign, City will have six weeks without a competitive fixture following their trip to West Ham on November 12 as events in Qatar take centre stage. But they want to be fit and firing when the Premier League campaign resumes on Boxing Day, and so have plans in place.

Players will be afforded a short rest when club football pauses before they return to training. But rather than work in the late November and early December chill at Seagrave, the players not at the World Cup will be going to the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi, for a warm-weather camp.

Upon their return, City will play a couple of games to rebuild match fitness. Clubs have started to announce fixtures, with Crystal Palace playing Brazilian side Botafogo and Newcastle hosting Spanish outfit Rayo Vallecano. City will announce their plans when confirmed.

“It’s a strange one,” City boss Rodgers said. “There’ll be a period of rest at the beginning but then we’ve got to get to work, and we’ve got to build our way through into a good place physically, mentally and tactically, ready for the first game.

“For that, it will mean hard training and hard work, but also getting minutes under the belt in organised games. We’ll have some games confirmed over the coming days to play.

“It’s important we keep in our rhythm and play games against different opponents so that we’re ready for that, for the 26th. Hopefully, by the time we come back, we’ll be in a really good place.”

City could be in action before they play at the King Power Stadium on Boxing Day. If they get past Newport in their Carabao Cup third-round fixture next Tuesday, they will be playing their last-16 tie in the week beginning Monday, December 19. The World Cup final is on Sunday, December 18.

That'll be the week of and behind closed doors then lol

If we do beat Newport, I wonder if it'll be best to play a side that has loads of players at the World Cup, or a lower league side if they get through.

given the randomness of the location, you’ve got to imagine we are going to arrange some big friendly and use this as an opportunity to get middle eastern exposure.

temperatures of over 30 degrees isn’t ideal so can’t imagine they picked it purely for sporting reasons

I don’t think it is that random really

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are regularly used for warm weather training camps by other teams, we just haven’t done it before

lived in AD for 6 years temp will be mid to high twenties during days in late Nov/Dec. Nighttime though will be coolish at low to mid teens. Maybe they'll train late afternoon/early evening... weather would be perfect then. Although i've been in Qatar past 5 years might contact the club see if i can attend a session or a game if they arrange one.

Really wish they'd just carry on with the season and play Braybrooke, Alves, Wormleighton and the lads. PLAY ON

In all seriousness hopefully these lads go on tour with them and once again try and convince Brendan they are ready. I am led to believe Braybrooke will make his debut for us vs Newport next week.

Wasn't bothering going down, but that would change my mind.

Would love to see him and Alves get some minutes

I suspect it'll be from the bench though, hope I'm wrong.

Honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t even get in the squad

Playing Valencia on Wednesday

I hear ya Ric. I mean what do I know but I’m ready to see our most talented academy players start to get some games with the first team. Make it regular so they are ready to play as impact subs later in the season. If Brendan gets this right it could be a great ace in the sleeve!

I think that first one ... I can't think of any of the "top" clubs doing anything but playing their reserves in the R16

About time...we have eschewed several opportunities to grow the brand....nothing since Hong Kong a few years back and obvs the LA/Stockholm tournament prior to that

Palace playing Botafogo. I'm sure we'll be able to pair up with some shite like Rotherham

Give me Rotherham over some random foreign side any day, similar to when we play pre season friendlies.

BTW Rotherham currently mid table in the Championship which is far from shite.

Even aside from giving Abu Dhabi something to sportswash with, I don't understand the logic of a hot weather training camp when we're going to be playing our competitive games in winter weather straight after. Imagine going from training every day in 35 degree heat to a grudge match against Newcastle in driving sleet on Boxing Day. lol

I kind of understand wanting the whole squad to have the same sort of acclimatisation whether they're at the World Cup or not, but I really just don't get how it's a recipe for anything besides reduced levels of performance and stamina, and potential increased risk of injury, over the winter period.

Is there any proven science behind dragging the squad between wholly different climates and back again, or is it just a jolly to please global partners?

Lots of teams do it, I remember Vardy speaking about the PL winning season when Ranieri gave them the week off during the second round FA cup weekend. He was in some gulf country vacationing, and he mentioned a few teams were there doing training while he was sipping drinks.

Mostly, it is to get them the hell out of Dodge, so they can have no distractions and, yeah, a bit of time at the beach after training. I am sure the players would prefer Abu Dhabi to Lapland, even if they would get cold weather training.

In a summer pre season then it doesn't really bother me, but when we'll probably have other top clubs in a similar area this autumn/winter then why not?

In conversation with someone the other day regarding friendlies and I'm sure they mentioned that they all have to behind closed doors with no streaming. Not sure what the exact reason was or if it's 100% credible.

whilst your logic makes sense,  I think there’s some science to it. You are more likely to pick up a muscle injury playing in the cold than in warm weather.  That said… i’m sure a trip to spain would have been fine 😆
