Or are you one yourself?

We all tell porkies. Embellish the truth or simply stretch it a tad. Sometimes our memories play tricks on us and we get things wrong. And then you get out-and-out liars.

I ask because my brother is a liar of dumbfounding proportion. I listen to him and I know it's not the truth. Not believe, I know. I look at him in incredulity. I've no idea if he believes what he's saying, or he knows full well it's a pile of crap. He claims to have visited places he never has. Worked in places he never has. If I dare question, it ends up in argument and his tantrums so I let it go. I honestly believe he has a problem, he wouldn't know the truth if he fell over it.

And, no, this is not a politician thread!

Edit: nor the football managers/BR thread

I used to work with a lad who did exactly the same. Anywhere you mentioned, he'd been. And the list of his previous jobs was spectacular, from chef to pilot. Now I couldn't actually prove he was lying, but he was early 20's and working in a call centre, so we all strongly suspected he wasn't telling the truth....especially as he told different people different versions of events. I think he was just a supreme fantasist and trying to impress. Quite sad really, aside from that he seemed a nice lad.

He is clearly a spy and you are not trusted with the information. :(

Well, he's not said he was a spy so it could be true, and a double bluff!

Yep, my brother does that too.

I've no idea why he does it because it's not like what he has done is without value or merit. I figure he has a desperate need to impress people for some unknown reason.

I barely ever lie TBH. Don't ever feel the need to. I'm at a point in life where I don't feel the need to try and impress people with nonsense, or fabricate stuff to try and wriggle out of trouble. I just hold my hands up.

There's someone on my other half's side of the family who does constantly, though. To the point it's become a bit of a running in-joke in the family.

He'll just make up elaborate stories that we know for a fact aren't true. She jokes that his dad has died about 5 times. lol

It's mainly attention seeking.

My family 'joke' about my brother's untruths too. We all just let him get on with it and smile. I'm just not sure it's the right thing to do. I mean, it's not like he's lying to the police or the tax dept (that we know of) so there's no real harm to the lies, but I think it is a problem he has and points to something deeper about self esteem or somesuch.

then you get the people that lie to deceive you out of money (mainly in business)

Yes true. I guess you kinda take that in your stride, more or less anticipate it, if not expect it. To a degree anyway, I'm not talking swindlers who'll take your !ife's savings.

Tbh, I think it's a genuine problem he has (compulsive or pathological) and I find it difficult to see the funny side of it.

Sorry if that comes across as wet blanket.

In which case, he may require some professional help

How does one get someone to seek professional help when they do not even acknowledge that they might have a problem, and any attempt at intervention ends in heated argument. Has anyone any experience?

Yes, I worked with a Walter Mitty type.

So many lies but the one that springs to mind was after graduating him and his mates (yeah right) went to book a cheap allocated on arrival lads holiday and went to Afghanistan. 🙄

Yes i have. The bloke i mentioned in my previous post claimed he'd just spunked 30 grand on a sports car. We asked him to bring it in but every day was a differnt excuse. Finally we said if you don't bring it in by friday, we know your're full of shit. Friday morning  he came in and told us he sold it the previous night.

One of my mates was terrible for it in his youth.Although doesn’t at all now.Always been a lovely bloke, but the lies were hilarious.

He got a job on the stock exchange apparently and one weekend he wasn’t coming out as they were going by private jet skiing for the weekend.Went into great detail of helicopter trips, how much champagne, the women.

Few months later I was round his and his dad was there and I mentioned it to him while I was waiting. His dad pissed himself.Said he was seeing his mum( they were divorced) and he worked in an office in Cambridge

Don't mind at all. He's 58. Frightening eh? It's gotten worse over the years too. He tells people he's had hip replacements, not true, with his wife sat beside him. She smiles meekly and apologetically, lord knows what it's like for her. I see him very rarely so don't have to deal with it.

You should get an air horn and just let it off in his face every time he talks shit. He'd soon stop
