Craig Brown, ex Scotland manager. 82.

He will always be the origional Scotland manager for me. He was manager for most of my childhood. He was Scotland manager when I first started watching football.

So sad. What a way to go though

I know this country. I've hiked the Devil's Backbone Trail on Mount San Antonio and it's f*****g lethal in winter - more of a climb. Baldy Bowl which is an exposed cirque on the south side of the mountain is similarly unforgiving, particularly if approached and traversed from the West where mountaineering gear and experience are essential. Even seasoned hikers can be lured in to their peril. An individual hiking up Mt. Baldy through the bowl may be prepared for the elements, others may not. But with altitude, the snow gets deeper, freezes, the trail is lost, then the wind and cold can kick in. It’s a recipe for disaster that has plagued the mountain for decades. From memory, he attempted it in January which is highly questionable alone. I don't know the details, but I would guess if he wasn't blown off the rim, he slipped and fell. One mistake and you can plummet thousands of feet in an instant. He was probably dead before his body came to rest. I'm assuming that's what happened.

I've always been struck by the fact that such a harsh, forsaken and brutal, beautiful alpine wilderness perches just above one of the most sprawling and populous metropolises and the 14th largest urban area on the planet.

One of his generals is now missing, so I’m counting that as (3) - one point to me already. I’ll have won this mfer by July.

Jane Birkin, 76 years old actress and singer

One day you're faking, next day they're waking (and you're not). :(

C'est la vie et l'amour et la mort. :dunno: (Gallic shrug)

I wish that I knew Serge's material better. He seems to have been an interesting chap. I know even less about Jane apart from the above and Charlotte Gainsbourg being her daughter.

Not getting at you Wymsey, and very sad for his family, but is this newsworthy? I think I already know the answer.

No problem at all.

Well, probably not as much if Rohan ever died (obviously more well-known), but it's still valid for this thread-type.
