Tom12345 Posted 17 April 2023 Posted 17 April 2023 He could have been a star player in many other teams. I feel for him in that his best years (he is around 29 now?) were given up to Leicester to sit on the bench. I mean I would feel less bad if he was a first team regular rotating in and out (like Castagne or Thomas), but he has clearly been seen as a bit part reserve player being relegated to the bench whenever the favourites are fit, despite great performances from Mendy. He was central to the Senegal team that won the African Cup too. 2 1
PAULCFC Posted 17 April 2023 Author Posted 17 April 2023 Nothing fancy{unless you count the OG v Saints)But steady
PAULCFC Posted 17 April 2023 Author Posted 17 April 2023 Which i think we need now....lets face it Ndidi is not what he was,put him in with KDH
Popular Post Dan Posted 17 April 2023 Popular Post Posted 17 April 2023 I'm gonna go against the quite common view here but I don't think he's that good. He's become overrated because of how badly Ndidi has dipped. He hasn't been terrible this season but I'm still far from convinced he's the answer in midfield. I think he's a quite flawed player in that he doesn't take many risks in his passing yet defensively he's compromised by his lack of physicality. He tries hard, gets on with it when not picked etc... but don't think he should be more than a squad option. Do think he's another player Rodgers hasn't been particularly fair with though - dropped him after a genuinely decent run of form. 22
Popular Post cruzFOX Posted 17 April 2023 Popular Post Posted 17 April 2023 He's consistent in his performances and is reliable. A consumate professional and never seems to throw a sulk. Similar traits to Kante. Of course he's no Kante in terms of the way that guy did the job of 2 defenders robbing the best attackers in the league blind and got attacks going. Still in a team where we have so many players in and out of bloody form or injuries where you don't know what your gonna get here's a guy that does his job and does it well. I don't recall him tallying up own goals, fouls that lead to penalties or bad assists to opposition players unlike N'didi or Amartay. For me I like Mendy and I feel bad he's not been played more often. Not every player has to stand out with exceptional all round skills. Sometimes you want a player to just to do the damn basics! Something we don't seem to be able to do anymore as a team (atleast not consistently and well). ps. yes he's short; so what? 6
PAULCFC Posted 17 April 2023 Author Posted 17 April 2023 (edited) That was what i set this thread about.......nothing fancy....just gets his job done.......which i think we need now. Edited 17 April 2023 by PAULCFC

He's a trier and he scored that beautiful goal against Spurs, but sadly the stats support Dan's view. He rarely gets in good positions to receive the ball, rarely does anything much when he gets it (hence the high pass completion rate), and rarely tackles although he does block a lot. He's good to bring on in the second half when we need someone to not do anything daft and see out a game when we're 2-0 up, but that hasn't happened for a while.
John12345 Posted 17 April 2023 Posted 17 April 2023 (edited) For me he's probably the 3rd best footballer in our team behind Youri and James. Far superior to players like kdh ,ndidi , soumare. *Not Inc. Ricardo who has chronic injuries. One other skill he has is he can take the ball under pressure at key times in games, when the other team are pressing you etc. He lacks height but hes very stocky and in the modern game the slightest touch is a foul anyway. Another player misused by C**tface Rodgers. Edited 17 April 2023 by John12345 2
roblcfc84 Posted 17 April 2023 Posted 17 April 2023 Never understood they way he’s been treated at times, always been really solid when plays. Needs to start every game.

Scotch Posted 17 April 2023 Posted 17 April 2023 Whether you rate him or not, he's arguably been our beat CM this season alongside Youri. When talking about playing our most in form CM pair, he is probably in there. When talking about playing our most in form CM trio, he's 100% in there. He may not be flashy or popular and he's not been flawless but we can only play what we have and in comparison to the rest of what we've got, he's done more this season than most.
Koke Posted 17 April 2023 Posted 17 April 2023 He's seen as good because the alternative is an incompetent KDH and a completely broken and fragile Ndidi. The reality is Mendy is not that good. He's alright as a squad player but at no point in the last 6 years have I thought that Mendy should be a guaranteed first choice leading us to to 8 finishes. Never. 2

He’s only started 7 league games this season of which we’ve won 1, drew 1 and lost 5 and he’s been genuinely good in maybe 3 of those games. Our record with him is actually worse with him than without him. Think people are overrating him this season a lot based on his Spurs performance and how poor Ndidi and KDH have generally been. I’m not saying he’s a horrrific player but I don’t get these views he’s having a great season either, he’s barely played and he’s been as much a part of a poor midfield as anyone else when he generally has. Don’t think he’d get into any other teams midfield in the PL either and I wouldn’t expect us to renew his contract in the summer. 1
Fox92 Posted 17 April 2023 Posted 17 April 2023 He's okay. I do think he's played well recently, especially since the Spurs game, and hasn't had a fair look in since but over the course of a season we need better.

I wouldn’t disagree too much with this assessment but there are games where he is suited to play — where the opposition midfield isn’t overly physical and there is less of a set piece threat. Saturday was one of those - I think wolves is another, especially if we are going to push the full backs on
moore_94 Posted 17 April 2023 Posted 17 April 2023 He’s alright (depending on what you need from a DM) Mendy has had some good games this season like against Spurs, but he mostly tends to be a 6/10 He is very good when it comes to recycling the ball and transitioning us across the pitch, 1 or 2 interceptions but that is about it with him He isn’t going to get us up the pitch himself or put an actual tackle in, and he can still annoy me sometimes as he has an occasion where he will lose it on the edge of our box trying to play out (although I think most of our players do that this season) I think an alright performance from him will stand out a lot more because you will obviously compare him to the performances of Ndidi and Soumare 31 in the summer, even if we stay up it is very much time to finally part ways 1
jayfox26 Posted 17 April 2023 Posted 17 April 2023 (edited) He makes less mistakes than KDH and Ndidi and given that we have conceded goals on many occasions from mistakes, I'd say he should be playing ahead of them 2 right now. I'd try a midfield of Mendy, Praet and Tielemans. KDH and Ndidi have been far to unreliable and are both useless when pressed which most teams have worked out. Edited 17 April 2023 by jayfox26 2
teblin Posted 17 April 2023 Posted 17 April 2023 If we play a back 3, his lack of height is less of an issue too. He's steady and rarely gives the ball away, I'd have him in the team
davieG Posted 17 April 2023 Posted 17 April 2023 He's the catalyst for quicker, smoother, cohesive, calmer forward progressing movement from the whole team. 3
