I'll take that. Tricky place to go to particularly as they needed a point and have had a great season, plus it was their last home game.

An early goal on Sunday and all the pressure is on Everton, with them needing to get the 3 points which will suit Bournemouth down to the ground on the counter. Let's not forget that if we beat West Ham and Wolves lose to Arsenal away they move up 2 places with a win and earn an extra £4.4m so I can't see them just rolling over.

Of course we need to win our game, but I do think that this is far from over.

It was 70% a good plan. But we forgot the shithousery bit as we didn't attack at all.

Well we did at the end. That was the point.

Come on. The idea was clearly to avoid an early goal, given that way we've responded to letting one in the rest of the season. Then try to pick up momentum with 25 minutes left.

It's hardly a bizarre plan given who/where we were playing and how we've been playing.

If you want to delude yourself that going at them from the off would have led to a win, have at it.

Except we didnt pick up momentum until there was less than 5 minutes left and even then it was brief.

Not in our hands now.

Praying for Bournemouth to be evil again at Goodison.

Pray we try to win first. Everton will fight with all their might. Unlike us, they won’t settle for a draw.

Why aren't they? They'll be favourites, but Everton can also be spectacularly shit. Goodison will be getting on their backs if they're sat on a draw and we're winning

If you're happy that we have to rely on a rubbish yo-yo team to win away without even attempting to keep it in our own hands then fair enough. Not for me.

If we lost we'd only be 2% worse off than we are now according to Opta stats 🤣

We treated Newcastle like they were Man City. But hey, a point is a point.

Pretty sure Newcastle have the best home record in the league

This. Clearly seems like we were trying to soak up the pressure - with emphasis on not conceding - and to hit them on the break when possible. They were just relentless. Feels like a v good point to me, and hopefully builds confidence going into the last game.

I think going all guns blazing and losing 5-0 would have done us no favours at all.

I'd rather Everton having to go for it against Bournemouth, than sit back knowing a point is enough had we lost tonight

Their attack has been lethal this season.

I get people being annoyed with the lack of ambition going forward but stopping their attack is not a simple task.

I genuinely can’t believe we were plying for a 0-0 at the end. It’s criminal, total embarrassment.

when Newcastle’s centre half’s we’re stood with the ball in stoppage time and our forwards were not pressing I've never been in such disbelief. How on earth is it a good idea to settle for a point when now Everton just need a win to relegate us. I’d rather lose trying than draw not.

such defeatist attitude.

I saw that as anything but a defeatist attitude.

Can’t believe some of the comments on here tonight.

The players themselves said it is like two cup finals and we need to win both. Didn’t even try. Didn’t even look like they want to win.

It is one thing to have a game plan to defend at first. But when it comes to crunch time, if the game plan was to win, you would show it. But we didn’t. We really didn’t try.

One thing that I got from tonight is that Souttar will be absolutely fine in the championship next year.  He is a perfect centre half for the league.

Also, when did Everton turn into peak Man City in the eyes of everyone on here? Is it just me, or have they not been total shit apart from one freak result against Brighton?

Facts.. and they have Calvert-Lewis injured on the final day. So will be relying on Maupay who has scored once this season

I just have this overly optimistic thought at the back of my mind that they can't keep scraping safety any more than Coventry or Sunderland could back in the day.

One day your luck runs out and results shaft you. I'm hoping it's Sunday for them. Goodison will be toxic if they hear we're winning and Bournemouth are out to bin them.

Disgusted playing for a draw.

If we survive on 34 pts now it won’t be down to Smith and his staff doing a good job, just pure luck.

We didn’t intentionally play for a draw, the idea was to stay in the game and try to nick a win which nearly came off

Posted (edited)

I have no real issue with the game plan, as long as the idea is to give yourself a half decent shot at nicking the game.

As it was, we strung 5 minutes of football together where the ball wasn't treated like unexploded ordnance and created 1 half chance all game.

Shows how broken the side is that even when all of our main threats are on the pitch we still couldn't change the course of the game in any way.

You're talking like this is 8 games ago!

If this was the Liverpool game I might even have agreed. Now though?

This was our last chance to keep our fate in our own hands and we didnt even attempt to. Now we're going to have to pray Everton don't win to have any chance of staying up. Going down with a whimper. Embarrassing.

No you're missing the point. We are not good enough to beat Newcastle away. Why go gung ho when we know defensively we're crap. Maybe even ruin our better goal difference. Doesn't make sense! Yes it was in our hands but realistically would it have been the right choice?! Think about it. Newcastle have only lost twice at home this season. We've been abysmal the whole season. Take a step back, breathe and then think.

Or open up and inevitably lose so Everton only need a point? Atleast a point puts pressure on Everton to have to go out and win now
