We should have offered him the contract he wanted instead of going for Smith, he would have kept us up I reckon or if we did go down (and now we have) definitely got us in the mix for promotion.

If we can convince him to come now it would be a coup far better than all the dross at this level.

Experience counts!

Personally I’d bring Pearson back home as all of our recent successes were built off the foundations he set. But Rafa is as good as you’ll get for where we are now.

We need to move quickly and ambitiously. None of the arrogance and malaise that saw us relegated.

For what it's worth, I think this is a poor championship we are going into and our main competition will be Saints and Leeds. Sunderland probably best placed to improve on this year from current crop.

It will be a tough league. Middlesbrough will be there too and the likes of Bristol, Coventry etc have a head start in us in terms of pre season. It is going to be a battle and some shrewd decisions need to be made quite quickly.

I don't think inexperience or potential is that bad look at Kompany was in post at Anderlecht and went to Burnley but I feel with us we cannot gamble with someone with potential for our championship campaign we need someone that knows the championship and can do the business in the premier league that's why we have to go for Rafa.

Current early betting odds have us and Leeds (unsurprisingly) as favourites to gain promotion.

Leicester - 5/1

Leeds - 11/2

Middlesbrough - 10/1

Southampton - 10/1

Ipswich - 14/1

Norwich - 14/1

Watford - 14/1

West Brom - 14/1

Stoke - 20/1

Sunderland - 20/1

Blackburn - 25/1

Coventry - 25/1

Millwall - 25/1

Swansea - 25/1

Hull - 28/1

Birmingham - 33/1

Cardiff - 33/1

Bristol City - 40/1

Plymouth - 40/1

Preston - 40/1

QPR - 40/1

Huddersfield - 50/1

Rotherham - 80/1

Ipswich high up in that list coming out of League 1, weak league or were Ipswich just way too good for League 1? 66 GD suggests the latter.

I can Middlesbrough winning it, they were going well under Carrick. Maybe we could take him.

First of all abandon that glamour tournament in Asia and get an appropriate pre season in

I quite like the thought of us being kicked out of it because we're not in the Premier league. The club's hierarchy deserve the embarrassment.

Southampton should be above both us. They look the most prepped to come up

It's mad how Luton got promoted (i know via with the playoffs) but they only scored 57 goals in the season.

Think it'll be between us, Leeds, Coventry, Blackburn, Middlesbrough vying for the top spots.

The league is completely open, there are no stand out teams to me. It all depends on who is prepared and gets a good start to the season

Not all about good starts. We need a solid structure with players ready for the fight and prepared to put in the hard yards every few days. These current players would barely do it once a week.

Other teams have had very good starts and then tail off.

I make the timeline heading into this season as follows:

10th June - Retained players list announced. As well as the above, I’d expect the development teams to taking a culling. We already know Pennant has been cut.

14th June - Domestic Transfer window opens.

22nd June - EFL fixtures are released at 9AM.

31st June - Contracts expire for Soyuncu, Tielemans, Mendy, Amartey, Evans, Tete and Bertrand.

1st July - International Transfer window opens.

August 4th - Championship kickoff

1st September - Transfer window closes.

Yeah Sunderland are a good shout. I'm not sure on Southampton. Mainly because of the new manager - not sure if Martin is enough given his record at Swansea? They conceded a lot.

I agree completely, it is not just about good start. Not all good starts will be rewarded, but if any team is going to stamp their authority on the championship next season they will have a good start.

We do need players who will fight and that means new players. We have to bring them in sooner rather than later so we are fully prepared

I hope the club has been crisis planning and has a list of players to recruit for next season in the championship.

Getting this transfer window right is crucial to stop us spiralling down and have a chance at bouncing back.
