Worked fine against Chelsea? We were utterly horrifying defensively.

First half we were looked much better 2nd half. Also it took a team who are currently 7th and could still finish 6th in the prem us going down to 10 men to beat us as far as I'm concerned that is working fine could it be better? yes. Was it good enough? also yes

I agree with most of this only bit that is wrong is Morgan was actually one of the quickest players in the league over 40-50m he had pace just not over a huge distance

40-50m is not a huge distance on a football field?!

4-5m and I'd agree.

Yes, the mismanagement (to the point of complete exclusion) of Vestergaard, and Soyuncu - two players notable for playing out from the back - is high on the lengthy Rodgers charge sheet. Especially when he invariably selected a player who struggled to make a simple pass from A to B (Amartey) ahead of them.

Was it sabotage rather than stupidity? You do wonder.

Anyway, we move on…

I'll be the first to get my pitchfork out anything Rodgers related but not picking Vestergaard was one of the few things he got right. He was absolutely dreadful when he did play. A mate who doesn't support us came with me to the game Palace away game in JV's first season and he was just laughing at how god awful he was in that game.

And he looked out of his depth playing against a then bottom of the football league Gillingham last season. The fact their fans were saying how bad he was probably gives you a good idea. Can you imagine him playing in defence with Danny Ward behind him last season?! Would have been relegated even sooner.

Now, a much more confident version of him can only be a good thing so let's see how he gets on.

If it wasn't for Sterling we could've conceded 10..

That's not down to Vestergaard. But the tactics. Tbh, deep down, it's a serious worry for next season how we were carved open so easily by a poor team

Can't remember Wes running past the half way line 🤔

Chealsea are 7th and could still finish 6th they are not a poor team. I don't understand why this line keeps being used

If we give Vestergaard a new contract we clearly have not learnt anything.

Reckon he'll be more on the bench, with the club looking for another quicker CB.

I think he will be used tactically when facing bottom half teams that will be more beatable when we can leverage his passing.

I keep saying this, we need to be competitive with the bottom half of the table. To do that we need to play to our strengths in these games and this is where Jannik will come in.

When we played them they were at rock bottom and losing games hand over fist.

Jackson, Sterling, that Brighton long haired lad. 3 or 4 youth teamers

 Garbage.

.We played them on the 17th of March.

They have lost 3 league games in 2024, out of 16.

They have played 29 games in all comps in 2024 and only lost 6.

I've asked before but nobody seems to know.... Surely if both players are out of contract and nobody else is wanting them, then their previous wages are immediately irrelevant, are they not?

Correct. They will get offered what we want and they can only compare what is on offer elsewhere.

Yes at the end of June they will effectively be unemployed if no agreement has been reached to re-sign for us.

Their respective agents could well be negotiating contracts with us or elsewhere though.

Have you ever considered that it may have been the tactics and how he was being asked to play?

Can you name any other successful 6'7" centre halves being asked to play such an incredibly high line and chase back like a racing snake after smaller more athletic strikers?

Vestergaard had played his game for years both in Germany, England and internationally, his game and abilities were well exposed, only Rodgers asked him to depart from his strengths.

As a slightly further back centre of three, in comparison, Enzo has utilised his strengths, particularly his considerable passing abilities. It was all so obvious.

Agree.

He was signed to replace an injured Fofana, FFS. What a totally preposterous idea. Like Barcelona signing Wilf to cover Messi in midfield,.coz,.like, he's a midfielder.

The one game I can recall Vesty was asked to play a low block v Man City at home, he was excellent.

That said, I do have fears Maresca will.expose him equally as.much

It’s a shame we can’t find a place for Akgun if the article is correct. I thought he looked good and would probably find it easier in the less physical surroundings of the Premier League compared to The Championship.

A defender / defence can't really be judged fairly if the midfield in front of them exposes them horribly.

Whatever their merits, Huth, Morgan et al only worked because of what they had covering them.

Would like to know what the deal is on vesty - if it’s a years extension then it won’t cost us too much but if it’s a proper contract then we’ll effectively have to re sign him with a s/o fee.

so if it’s publicised on social media that we’ve given him a three  year deal on 75k then 15k/week (2.25m) could be the s/o fee portion.

If we are paying Vesty 75k for 3 years that’s really ****ing annoying with our FFP issues. Vesty isn’t good enough against PL attackers and we’ll end up having to replace him sooner than later once Enzo realises like Brendan did.

Nothing has been said to this effect but if we have offered him a multi year deal then I fail to see how we wouldn’t be if you include the s/o fee
