Club to blame I agree but isn't this more on the system where it benefits the big clubs, and the rules about poaching players early?

Besides if I was him, you'd go to Man City - time to take the blue tinted specs off.

What's the betting that Monga makes and appearance for Man City before Evans makes an appearance for us....

Probably pretty good chance of that. Even if that doesn't happen, it seems pretty likely that Monga will have played far more senior football than Evans will have by the time he's 20/21

you’d think monga makes a carrabao cup squad for Man City next autumn

I think evans will get some game time here by then - we’ll play carrabao cup in august next season!

I know the parents of someone who went Man C, he was there for a couple years and left because of them hoovering up young talent from all over the UK. He ended up packing football up because he got disillusioned with it all. So it's not all it's cracked up to be.

I suppose it depends on Monga and his family but he’s likely to play senior football next season with us in the Championship. whereas with Man City he’d be in the u21s a few years (I guess i don’t know)

Chris Rigg for Sunderland is now 17 but was playing regularly for them aged 16. Monga is 16 in the summer right?

I get the whole giving him the experience of putting of the bench but I guarantee the only scenario he comes on is if we're 2/3 up with 5 minutes to go.

So never then lol

It's all well and good us offering him a contract and route into the team, when we have no certainty over which division we'll be in or what manager will be in charge. And given our diverse appointment 'strategy', there's no hint what style we'll be using

Could the club not offer him some form of loyalty contract outside of professional terms? For instance if he makes a 1st team appearance we pay him a one off fee of say £5m.

Surely if these players are as good as we think, this would be worth the fee and would dangle the carrot for them to stay and sign professional terms. It would also give the player security that they have a bargaining position in the event a Liverpool or Man City come along, as that'd set the bar for his signing on fee. It'd also act as a deterrent for suitors if they know they have to pay him £5m, plus an unknown fee to be set by a tribunal which could be anywhere between £3-5m, and also his wages on top. Furthermore, I imagine it'd stop these clubs approaching players on the off chance that they might turn into the next superstar, as it'd be a sizeable financial commitment for them on an unknown.

I genuinely think there's more chance that the likes of Nyoni and Monga end up like Taveres, than they do becoming established PL players like Chilwell and Barnes.

Saw it with a young lad who signed for Man City about 14 years ago. Was apparently the next big thing, signed a £1m contract at a young age, and got swallowed up by the system. Don't think he made a PL appearance, ended up in lower league football, and retired early. Don't get me wrong, he's very wealthy now and actually more successful than he was as a pro footballer, but it goes to show that unless you're literally on the levels of or better than a 1st team player at Man City, more than likely you'll slip through the cracks.

We have to give the young lads a chance id rather see them playing than some of the awful dross RVN continues to believe in at least these lads will give some passion to a squad that is lacking in anything at all!!

One thing this isn't is 'fair play'.

If the vultures are allowed to pick the best talents from smaller clubs (again) for virtually nothing, then what is the point?

I don't care what he wants, he is our player and the rules need changing to stop this kind of daylight robbery.

To say he has no pathway is ridiculous.  You could almost list a full eleven of players that have come through the academy in recent years.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, long term this will kill the national team for precisely the question you ask. How many teams will decide that having their best youth products poached for a pittance isn't worth it and give up on having an academy (Brentford have already done it). And, when academies start shuttering en masse, how many top prospects will slip through the net?

At the end of the day he's got the opportunity to go to Man City, he won't be in the first team but can you imagine how alluring that would be to a 16 year old lad, to be in close proximity to the likes of Pep and the players they have there.

There's no chance, if they're truly interested, that he would be staying here - even if we offer him X amount of minutes over the rest of the season, next season etc.  Can't blame him, just hope we get some actual proper compensation.

Did we ever get anything for Nyoni from Liverpool?

They still haven't paid.

Surely there must be a time limit

either pay a fee that we demand or go to tribunal??

it can’t just drag on - unless that’s down to us as we’re hoping he plays more games to deliver a higher fee ???

I feel like any transfer of a youth player to another club before they are allowed to sign a permanent contract should come with a 25% sell on clause by default + whatever future compensation is agreed.
Plenty of clubs like Man City and Chelsea hoover up the countries best talents and the teams that developed them get a slap in the face when they turn out to be top draw, it's largely the same for Championship clubs hoovering up talent further down the league system also.
It would need to be ironed out with finer details but for example if Monga has been with us for x number of years, and is within x years of being eligible for a professional deal, we will get 25% sell on regardless of the compensation.
This would massively benefit clubs lower down the table that produce talent. The % could be lower depending on how long the player spent with the original teams academy, and lower depending on how many years before their first pro contract was signed.

I should imagine to a degree a lot of the sorts of clauses many of us have mentioned would actually be illegal as you're restricting the freedom of movement to somebody who isn't even old enough to sign a contract.

I think you're just going to have to accept that this is how it goes.

And Mongas career trajectory, should he leave us, will be incredibly  important to the future of our academy.  If Nyoni nad Monga establish themselves at the top end of the game, they'll solidify the idea of moving to the elite clubs at a young age as being the best course of action.

If they do fxxk all and fade into obscurity whilst we keep, develop and bring through other young players like Evans into the side, then it'll make a case for players to stick with us.

We need consistent examples of players that can break into the team and make names for themselves, equally we'll lose a few who will go on to bigger and better or go into obscurity, but at present the examples of young players, under 21, are scant.
