What surprised me most is when some people said "it'll be alright in January when Van Nistelrooy can bring his own players in" as if that was ever going to happen.

You've probably hurt Woyo's feelings with this post.  lol

Probably because no one of any quality wants to come to a relegation fight in January, and if they do their terms might be unacceptable for the club who might be trying to reduce the wage structure.

There's two issues, not bringing anyone else in and not bringing anyone else in yet. If we do drag in a journeyman, a has-been and a never-will-be, kicking and screaming whilst prodded with a stick by their agent on Monday we'll resent the fact they could have contributed towards the Palace and Fulham matches and perhaps helped us to a better result. The reasons previously listed here regarding restrictions and problems moving on existing players are all valid, realistically  if we do get anyone else in it's likely to be Monday evening, with all due respect to our club we ain't their first choice right now but as time ticks down and other clubs get their prime targets we suddenly become back in favour with the agents and players looking for a move. It's not ideal, you want players who want to be here, you don't want a last minute scramble where anything could happen to fax up the deal. My gut feeling is we'll move on one other, likely Thomas, maybe an U-23 or two on loan, bring in a so-so underwhelming loan signing from abroad then claim to have tried gallantly to get Willian but alas, sigh, shrug, simply ran out of time, who'd have thought.

Not fully utilizing both PL loan spots this season is a criminal waste, using one of them and a chunk of salary to have a guy jog around Seagrave and be in the stand (if he is) on match days when we could instead be asking a top 6 club to loan a keen vibrant young CB / LB / CF or winger this week is excruciating, where was the research, the longer term thought (beyond Daka's injury)?

Totally thought he only came because he was promised funds.  However, reading his comment along the lines of wanting players but withing the clubs restrictions reads to me he has been conned...sounds familiar?

I personally think they have decided to stick than gamble which I think is totally wrong.  I guess they are offering low wages and shopping in the bargain basin as a certain tw.t has been told to sort his act out re wages/contracts.  It's a difficult one if you look at it objectively imo.  Spend and stay up= brill.  Spend and get relegated possibly means several seasons until we can challenge for promotion again.  Still think speculate to accumulate but doubt we will sign anyone other than another muppet in the food area.

I think the issue was our summer transfer window. The net effect was a squad no better than the one in the Championship and we p***ed most of the money up the wall on “has beens” or “never weres”.

January is never a good time to do business, but you might have a slim chance if you’re topping up what was done in the summer window. We’re a financially hamstrung club trying to add the quality that might actually make a difference to our starting eleven, whilst undoing the mistakes of the previous window. It’s a big ask

Apparently Edouard will unlock goal scoring mode on February 4th as it's contractually obligated for him to do so.

Don't fear, goals will be here....

He's always very open and transparent and replies to all correspondence to the club.

Tried that… he’s got an out of office on his email, think he books January off every year to be honest…

It’s no mystery is it?

- Historic mismanagement means our ability to spend on transfers and wages is limited

- Squad is hampered by deadwood and poor loans we can’t cancel

- PSR restricts our spending and means deadwood is harder to shift, without it going down as a loss

- Recruitment ‘system’ struggles to identify players

- As a relegation threatened team that’s clearly poorly managed off the pitch, we’re not a massively attractive destination

This post should be in the next match day programme...

Here’s some context.

https://www.premierleague.com/transfers

A summary of the number of confirmed transfers for Premier League clubs so far in January

* Note, I’ve ignored loans of younger players and looked to focus on first team activity.

Arsenal: 1 out

Villa: 2 in, 3 out

Bournemouth: 4 in, 2 out

Brentford: 1 in, 1 out

Brighton: 1 in, 3 out

Chelsea: 2 out

Palace: 1 in, 1 recall out

Everton: 0

Fulham: 0

Ipswich: 3 in, 2 out

Leicester: 1 in, 2 out

Liverpool: 2 out

Man City: 4 in, 1 out

United: 1 out

Newcastle: 1 out

Forest: 1 in (Wayne Hennessey), 1 out

Southampton: 3 in, 1 out

Spurs: 2 in, 1 out (tfr in immediately loaned out)

West Ham: 1 out

Wolves: 1 in

So, yeah, there hasn’t been much activity across the league so far.

Here’s another source, https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/premier-league/transfers/wettbewerb/GB1/plus/?saison_id=2024&s_w=w&leihe=1&intern=0&intern=1 which summarises there have so far been;

38 departures

49 arrivals

costing a net balance of close to -£250m; with more than half of that spend courtesy of Manchester City.

Why is the market so slow?

Given we’re in the era of registering 25 man squads, it makes sense that January will be lighter on activity than over the longer summer window.

Most clubs will have filled there 25 man allocation at the start of the season, meaning any in’s requiring registration would need to be balanced by transfers out - or leaving player(s) unregistered.

PSR will also be a factor in activity at this point in the season - clubs will know more about their positions and what headroom they may or may not have from actual income and expenditure figures for the season so far, compared to the projections they would need to base spending on during the summer window.

Yes.

The rumours that RVN was ready to walk as he'd been promised players brought in... well if there was any truth in it, then I'd say he's incredibly naive or at best, not done his research.

Anyone with half a clue surely realises that more than a couple of signings would be unlikely. Even the big clubs don't do more than that usually.

It seems some fans think that if you've identified a player you would like, it's just a case of paying the money and he's yours.

Roger that Jon you lost me there for a minute, so it's a NO, to any further business in January then...

Because until we let Cannon and Hamza go, our squad was at 25 players, which is the maximum amount of squad players allowed…..
