Another appalling decision by footballing authorities.

Germans have it so right and yet we move further away from it.

It seems the clubs voted for it.

The club's voted for it.

How does relegation and promotion work in Germany then?

3rd bottom in bundesliga plays 3rd in their second tier.

Exactly, hardly fans are they.

Reward for first and second and then a play off between 16th and 3rd of the higher and lower leagues.

Also personally think this would be way worse than current system - the gulf between PL and EFL means 3rd bottom PL team has potentially big advantage over 3rd place EFL team - so even more of a closed shop.

And just means 18 out of 24 teams in the Championship have nothing to play for...

So completely unworkable here then given PL vs EFL

It'd never happen, but I'd love the EFL and PL to be merged with a full rebranding where we actual celebrate the English footballing pyramid more.

Basically 'the 92' being a bigger deal where the TV revenue is spread more evenly between the leagues/tiers.

I'd personally bin off all play offs in all leagues in all sports.

Knock out competitions are for cups, not deciding your entire ****ing season.

Infuriates me that you can top the table in rugby and not win the league at all.

Top three should go up in the Championship, end of. **** cheap manufactured drama, give me actual meritocracy.

Imagine working your arse off all year, finishing third in the table out of 24 teams and missing out on Promotion to the 8th place side you finished some 20 odd points ahead of and beat home and away purely because one of your best players happens to be injured for the final or the ref ruins the game with a terrible decision or some other bit of spawny, bullshit luck you couldn't avoid.

Akin to college football at the minute. They've just had their second 12-team playoff, upped from four.

12 teams works great - a good variety of teams, good games and intrigue. But the college divisions just can't help but stand in their own way. They already want 16 teams, some want 24 teams. Diluting not only the actual value of the playoffs themselves but the regular season games.

FIFA doing the same with the World Cup, too. They just can't help themselves.

Agreed. It was a joke last season that Sheffield United finished so far ahead of the other three play off sides (and eventually stayed down). They had to play Bristol City despite finishing 22 points ahead of them in the league season, absolute joke, and quite rightly Sheffield United beat them 3-0 and 3-0 across the two play off games.

Big fan of the play offs myself. Like the idea to add more as well. Nothing worst than the last games of the season being dead because there's nothing to play for.

Automatics for top 2 is fine.

I agree on the sentiment of meritocracy, but I'd worry about the practicalities of 18 or so teams out of 24 having nothing to play for, for the 2nd half of the season.

Think how much less interesting the PL would be if there was no european places on offer for example (kinda equivalent of playoff spots).

That play off format is fine provided that you bin off two legs for the semi and ensure that the highest ranked team ALWAYS gets home advantage. If you finish 8th in the league you should not be getting a home play off game at any point even if it’s part of two legs.

I like the play offs. 7th and 8th is a bit much unless the semi finals were one leg too with higher ranked team at home.

Off topic but some European leagues have play offs to determine the European places, thats a step too far for me

That makes sense for the other/minor european leagues that have fewer european places to hand out in the first place.

Yeah I like that, that's how they do it the lower levels of non league. Highest placed team gets home advantage.

Yeah I've always liked it.  One leg, higher team gets home advantage.  Much fairer.
