Having children with your first cousin isn't a big issue really as long as it happens once. Where is becomes an issue, is where generations of families keep having children with their cousins it narrows the gene pool.

The reason its not been an issue here before, is because it typically happens once then doesn't happen again for many generations.

Other cultures view this differently.

Unless you're royalty

So Norfolk then 😄

AI says that the risk doubles from 2-3% to 5-6%

those numbers don’t seem high but will deliver a large extra cost to the state (and the families affected). I wonder if studies have been done where the benefits as stated by the NHS outweigh those costs.

Thats for a single first cousin marriage. The numbers go much higher as it happens over generations.

Made the decision to completely cull social media this weekend - suspended one account and then reduced what I am following on two others.

It's apparent now that some many parties on both sides of anything resembling 'news' are being funded by outside influence - propaganda under a new dress code. Can't be arsed for reading most of it anymore.

Awful isn’t it

I’m still managing to keep strong feeds from many viewpoints to avoid the echo chamber issue but there are a number of x accounts which I’m pretty sure are funded/run by organisations or states rather than individuals.

I do see a few accounts that deliver information that often takes several days to appear in msm.  Over time, you get to know which sources are more likely to be reliable but no account is free from bias and misinformation.

Whitehouse news conference this evening at 6-15 our time - could be v consequential if we already have agreements in place. But as has happened so often these last few months, it would be no surprise for it to fall apart.

Surely not? It's your cousin ffs!

I've got kids and the thought of them growing up to marry one of my brother or sisters kids makes me feel sick - any business or discussion like this needs to be nipped in the bud. NHS needs to stay well out of this other than explaining the risks of your inbred kids potentially having serious health issues.

No problem with cousins IMO.

As mentioned it's when it becomes a regular thing that it influences the genetics of a small population.

I did this a few years ago and never looked back. I'll occasionally scroll through reddit but I don't have an account.

Was forced to reactivate a LinkedIn profile as I'm job hunting at the moment and it's awful. Twitter is a toxic cesspit. Facebook is garbage. Instagram is vapid.

I don't miss any of it and I can't imagine how much brainrot is out there with the rise of AI over the past couple of years.

The point being it's purely a social stigma, and as a one off has very little if any health consequences.

As someone who comes from a big extended family (dad was 1 of 8, mum was 1 of 6), I have a couple of good looking female cousins!

What about cousins once removed. I.E. Your cousin's kids? Asking for a friend...

Gets in before Norfolk gets more stick.

People just say Norfolk because they don't want to say Bradford or Birmingham
