Our free breakfasts are £4.50 for a bowl of cheerios. Its absolutely the staff you are paying for.

It should be “free” to those who are on some kind of benefit, not the whole population. Completely daft use of government money.

sure thing.... the new proposals define that a family farm can be gifted to the next generation and that this will sit outside of Inheritance Tax IF the existing owner survives for 7 years beyond the date of the "gifting" of the farm.   There is Whole of Life policies now that have been developed, that can be taken out by the existing owner, which will pay out to the new owners of the farm if that individual were to pass away in that 7 year window. That policy would be used to cover the cost of the IHT if it were to come into effect.

The cost of those policies is far below any kind of Commercial Loan that would be needed to pay the IHT tax in the future.

These things are available now and in place and being taken up by farmers.

Just the same as gifting any property or wealth, not only farms. Our solicitor advised against doing it probably thinking that I won't live for another 7-years!

Except that its benefit is for working parents who need to get to work early not benefit claimants. You can get 2-3 weeks of kids breakfasts for the cost of a single day at breakfast club.

Who will buy them when the next generation can’t afford the inheritance tax?

If they cannot afford the inheritance tax when they pass, how are they going to afford to buy them. Most families purchasing farms are not playing millions for them and so are not likely to be subject to HI when they pass them on. In any case there are ways to mitigate HI when passing onto family members (trusts etc).

Last time I checked it was a parental responsibility to give your kids breakfast?

FREE breakfast clubs aren’t free, they are funded by the taxpayer and an inefficient way and more costly than just giving your kids a round of toast a bowl of cereal.

it’s effectively early morning free childcare and nothing to do with breakfast.

State dependence. Put the extra money it’s costing into improving schools, or pay teachers and TA’s a better wage.

Why is it that the cost to the taxpayer only seems to get mentioned whenever money is spent on ordinary people?

It's not about the new owner keeping it for 7 years, it's about the person who is gifting the farm having to live for an additional 7 years beyond the date of the gift being given.

Ultimately, farm's are passed between generations, so the likelihood of the new owner selling it is small as it will be a family member who Inherits the farm.

The whole of life cover, protects all parties from IHT.  IF the original owner survives beyond that 7 years, then IHT won't be payable anyway.... If they don't, then the whole of life policy pays out an amount that would essentially pay the costs of IHT.

This isn't an amendment, it was always the proposal.

everyone just got into a wild tantrum, without properly understanding the detail.    Bear in mind that most farmers are conservative voters, so it was as much about the fact it was labour doing this, rather than the actual premise.

Yup, that is certainly very different to how it was presented at the time!

Presented by who though.... That's my point. Politicians, media outlets and shadowy social media actors. This same story is repeated across much of what Labour have done. Misinformation is trashing democracy. I don't care who you vote for, it's not good when people aren't told the truth on which to base their decisions.

On certain things, the outcome is and will be a lot worse than "not good".

If Trump starts and then stops a war, does that count towards his tally of wars stopped?

It’s not a war, purely a special military operation!

Also, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Felon#47 destroying the entire East Wing of the White House for his own personal vanity project yet.

Edit: sorry, looks like it has been mentioned, but only in passing.

It's not as if the White House hasn't been burnt down (by the British), rebuilt or undergone renovations in the past 200+ years under different presidents.

Fair, previous points about this particular renovation being rather different in terms of intent notwithstanding.

The migrant from the Epping hotel that was convicted of sexual assault has been released by mistake and now on the run.

Speechless

Probably happens quite often except this one is high profile. Embarrassing.

Last seen heading into London to no doubt get a false name. If only we had identity cards.

Inside job or just incompetence? The enquiry is going to be interesting.

What are you even angry about?  Low income parents having child care available so they can go to work?

When I was young usually one parent stayed home for the kids (in those days invariably the wife). The difference was, they didn't expect to have the large TVs, the latest mobile, or new clothes every week.

Of course large TVs and mobiles didn't exist then, but most working class families would have a simple black and white TV, use the telephone booth two streets away and repaired clothes and passed them down.

They did this so their kids had enough to eat and a roof over their head. They made sacrifices. Nowadays people spend money on luxury items and expect the state to provide for their essential needs.

This is a generalism, there do, of course, still exist people who make sacrifices for their kids first, even in that case sometimes not being enough.

You have to laugh or you'll cry. I dread to think how it gets any worse from here with the caliber of people now running everything in this country. 🙈
