Fooled by who?

Mental illness is the more probable.

Paranoid schizophrenia is the most likely reason and that condition means a mood or situation can make a sufferer turn on a dime.

Why is he not in a hospital then.

Maybe he wasn’t detained under the mental health act as the AMHP feared being called racist, the same as thing allegedly happened with the Axel Rudakubana.

Neither was Axel Rudakubana.

He (Axel) was a paranoid schizophrenic that had been assessed and discharged from a MH unit.

There are paranoid schizophrenics out there without a diagnosis or a hospital admission. It's impossible to know until something like this happens.

They look like "normal" people. Believe it or not.

Is this "care in the community"

Also to add, there are paranoid schizophrenics who function in society, if they keep taking their drugs and attend therapy.

It's not as simple as "throw them in the looney bin!"

Some people are heartless b******s who wouldn't give anyone a 2nd chance and judge a whole race on the actions of a few.

I suppose the difficulty is ensuring patients keep taking the drugs and attend therapy

Think you’re getting mixed up with the Nottingham case? There, the guy didn’t turn up for his medication reviews and instead of getting followed up, he got discharged, stopped taking his meds and then went off the deep end. Mental health services are massively understaffed and staff overpressured, the system cannot cope and more people get missed, not just in terms of harm to others but harm to self too.

Glad you've mentioned this as I'm surprised there are people out there who think everyone suffering paranoid schizophrenia will be in a MH institution or ward or hospital.

Or maybe I'm not surprised.

I'm impressed with the police and ambulance response in Huntingdon.  We're almost used to seeing this kind of thing in a metropolitan area where there are lots of cops in a relatively small area, but Cambridgeshire is essentially a rural county and Huntingdon is a small market town with nothing like the staffing we see in large cities.  To have mustered that level of response on a Saturday evening so quickly is astonishing.

I live in Huntingdon and thankfully the train station is 2 minutes from cambs police hq, a hospital, ambulance station and fire station. Addenbrooks is 25 minutes or obviously quicker by air. We also have the police helicopter and air ambulance fortunately!

Things like this dont happen here, we are a small, rural market town so its shocking

I'm not surprised. Too many Dr Mengeles in the world who think that anyone has some form of disability or long-term ailment is subhuman and should be locked away out of sight. Or culled to stop their drain on society.

Social Darwinism sadly appears to be on the rise again, yes.

Can blame the fool individualist Americans for that one, again.

The question does remain though as to how you treat those with violent and sexual tendencies. I've seen the inside of a secure unit and there are people there who just absolutely would not function in society, no matter how hard you try. They can never be released, as they have repeatedly shown a risk to others.

Exactly. My wife is a clinical psychologist and that was her immediate thought.

unfortunately, the entirety of the social care model in the UK has been destroyed.... the authorities have moved from Social Services providing secure care, to more of a "supported living" environment, with carers coming in once a day or more....  This is so that governments could shift the budgets... "social care budgets reduced".... but ultimately, welfare budgets grown massively as they get rent and carers paid for through other means. Moves it from Local Government to National.

Isn’t it something that if medicated you can live a fairly normal life? Genuinely don’t know much about it

On discharge from a MHU, a patient can be subject to a Community Treatment Order, CTO, whereby they are monitored and have to be compliant with their meds and attend appointments with their psych team, otherwise they can be re-admitted under a section.

That would apply for those who have a range of mental health issues/ disabilities but surely the priority and focus should be on security and restrictions of those who pose serious physical threats?
