We’re gonna regret giving them the option to buy aren’t we 🤣🥲

We will probably regret not getting more.

Some options don’t mean others clubs couldn’t come in and offer more though. What if a more attractive offer was made to him?

It's not an option. It is an obligation and good riddance. He's a good player with the potential to be a VERY good player but he (along with the rest of the team) didn't do enough in the PL, which saw us relegated. Where he didn't want to play and get us back. I don't want players like that in the team.

Let's be fair if the rest of them were as good as him we would have stayed up.

The fact that he played to a decent level after spending the season playing with Ayew and Reid on the wings is around as much as you can expect from any talent, only truly world class players like De Bruyne would have produced any output in that team.

Could Rennes accept a higher bid from another club or JJ force a move elsewhere?

Don't think so.  Pretty sure "option" just means we have already agreed terms with the club and player and it's up to us to decide if we take up said option while they're obligated to sell/sign.  Otherwise an "option" is just a redundant addition.  If the other parties can just do what they like we have no more an "option" than any other club.

I’m not bothered about keeping him mate, I personally didn’t like the lack of end product we witnessed.  I just meant the potential money!

El Khannous scores again for Stuttgart

A combination of playing in a better team and the Bundesliga not being at the same level as the Premier League is defo working for ELK

And he’s got Russell Martin the chop!

I wouldn’t consider that a good thing, if marti so much as has a Cambodian take away, he will end up as our boss. After 3 weeks of trying to woo potter of course

Generally speaking, there is not an agreed contract. Think of it like a release clause. The option price is set at £5m let's say, which means that Rennes have to accept a bid of that value or more from us, but could reject it from another club. However, we still have to agree the terms with James and he could turn us down. Rennes could even offer him a new deal if they wanted. So we would obviously have had that conversation with him, and it is possible that we've soft agreed a contract with him if we're promoted but nothing legally binding.

Fatawu was a deal that had an obligation to buy (thought of course depended on us being promoter), same as BEK to Stuttgart (which has no conditional causes for that to take effect as far as we're aware). In these cases, the contract is agreed with the player as part of the loan and is considered legally binding, being enacted as soon as the transfer is completed.

Now I guess you could also have a deal where you agree terms with the player and make that binding then decide whether you want to confirm the deal but I think that's a bit trickier from an employment rights point of view as the transfer is not legally binding/does not come into force if set conditions are met, but only if the buying party wants to do the deal at that time. It's also a bit of a halfway house because it's neither one nor the other. First option to buy (as it should be called rather than just an option) incentivises teams to take a punt on a player, pay a higher loan fee up front or potentially less as a buyer and also gives the parent club the chance to still keep the player if they do well and can better a contract being offered elsewhere. Obligations allow teams to have the security of a deal done with the flexibility of accounting periods/cashflow/registration rules etc.
