If we can get rid on a free then thats a good bit of business.

Suppose it depends what his league 1 wage would be

if its was 30k/week then a free is effectively a 1.5m fee

if its 50k/week then its 2.5m (which is probably what he’s worth with a year left)

suspect we’ll try and get some money given our history of trying to move players on and then we’ll be in panic mode come mid July when he’s refused to come to pre season and the best we’re offered is a nett loss for us.

God I hope we can offload him to Cov.

If there's one thing you need as a newly promoted team with a potential relegation scrap on the horizon, it's the steely determination and never say die attitude of Harry Winks.

Where is the link to the cov story?

Likely from the crack of someone's arse.

There's no way it'll happen.

We'll dither around all summer and eventually organise a loan to somewhere like Charlton on deadline day with us paying 90% of his wage.

Dream scenario:

Cov buy him, he signs for them because he's got loads of respect for Lamps who wants him personally.

A week later, Lampard gets the Chelsea job.

Coventry hire Ruud van Nistelrooy to replace him.

Hilarity ensues.

Stop it, you'll make me enjoy following football again.

Unfortunately ive got to go to Coventry in the next few days . I will give me a lift there if he needs one ..

Rat playing for what will be a sinking ship next season seems somehow poetic

Can't loan him out in the last year of his deal can we? Unfortunately.

I can see a mutual termination being worked out now.

We've done this a few times under Rudkin.

Faes, Iversen and Perez off the top of my head.

Genuinely think no one will want him, he's absolutely trashed his career.

He's a £5k-£10k a week player on £45k a week, the only we could get rid of him is if we subsidise the majority of his wages.

It wouldn't usually be done as it doesn't make much sense usually. I think we're in a unique situation where it does though, if a club said we'll cover 50-60% of his wages for a season on loan then I don't know of any reason why that wouldn't be allowed.

Obviously if we can get a fee for these players then great, but the biggest concern is taking a massive chunk out of that wage expenditure.

This I can see happening. Any fee we get will obviously be beneficial.

For everyone's sake he needs to move on. So he can move on with his career, we can be relieved that a high earner is off the books and the club benefits going forward.

I don’t think there’s any restriction on loaning for the last yr of contract, it just doesn’t make commercially.

Player worth nothing to existing club, they just want him off the wage bill. Buying / loaning club must see a value in the player so to hold his registration for that year gives them opportunity to agree longer deal before he’s a free agent. I think it’s just a cost neutral way of gaining a slight advantage for the incoming club so they don’t generally loan… although there may be PSR implications I haven’t worked out!

It makes sense for the player and loaning club if the club don't want to pay all of his wages.

Yup, and they could just offset wage contributions in an upfront agreement, that may even include monthly payments against that agreement to not affect cash flow

I think he would absolutely destroy league 1. Make him captain, give him a bit of authority. Maybe even put him on some coaching courses. He's an England international!

I am pretty sure this exact sentence will be said by either Rudkin or Top over the next few weeks in an internal meeting.

We can’t afford him

we have others who will play his role

At this stage of things i think we cut our losses, will probably end up at someone like Watford or Burnley when they come down

Regardless of if we want to cancel his contract, unless he does something to warrant a termination he could literally sit on his arse taking the money. At least if we can make him useful by trying to get his arse into gear to help the club.
