Nearly Leicester Managers

Not so long ago there was thread called Nearly Leicester Players, this time thought it would be good look back at Nearly Leicester managers. Not the typical paper talk as pretty much majority of the links in the press are most likely untrue. Think about manager's that have go on record to say they were offered the Leicester job but turned it down or actually applied and held talks.

 

To name a few- 

 

Harry Redknapp in 2001- After disaster spell under Peter Taylor, which seen the club rock bottom of the premier league. Leicester needed a saviour, Redknapp at the time had been out of work for just over a year. Redknapp verbally agreed to replace Taylor only for him to change his mind at last minute.

 

Martin O'Neill in 2015- Before Ranieri, O'Neill admitted on Talksport he was offered the job in the summer to succeed Nigel Pearson in what would been emotional return to Leicester. O'Neill being forced to turn it down due to commitments with the ROI.

 

Jesse Marsch in 2022- Not a popular choice at the time, the American only needed to sign the dotted line. However after watching Foxes take on Bournemouth, he just thought "nah" and turned the foxes down.

Brian Little said in his under the cosh interview, Milan Manadric offered a return to Brian in 2007 just after Rob Kelly been sacked to come until the end of the season, but didn't fancy working under Milan even on a short term basis.

Was this not more of a case that about 90% of the fan based thought this was possible the shi**est appointment we could make. Is there any evidence ha actually turned us down?

Bumped into Roberto Mancini in a pub across from St Pancras in 2017. Asked him if he neerlt took the job after Ranieri left. 

 

He asked me where the toilets were and ignored my question.

Yeah, and I will admit it was partially my fault for being bored at work. 

 

I was doing a shit day job where I sat at a desk all day. I used to keep an eye on Oddschecker between calls and emails. Out of nowhere, Preki appeared on the list in the top 5, so I made a thread on it here and it detonated from there. People then went digging, found stuff on it and it caused a bigger rumble, then it was mentioned by Rob Tanner and it went more crazy, then hes odds on, then he's doing a press conference in the next 3 hours for a 2nd division US team, then we crashed to stream and then it turned out to be something completely different.

 

This place went mental for a few hours, and I put it down to a shit office job and my undiagnosed at the time mental health issues causing me to go a bit crazy over it and stoking the flames. 

 

Got the meme of the coach looking exasperated though...

Edit: Link if anyone wants to watch FT have a meltdown. I read through it this morning and was in tears.

I've literally never known what really happened with all of that. I've heard some say he was genuinely offered the job and the club backed down after seeing the response. 

 

They genuinely stopped taking bets and some of the pages I followed said he was set to join. Crazy times. Only Leicester could follow it up with something even more crazy.

This is a great topic. 

 

Here's a few highlights from down the years:

 

1955:  Dave Halliday was appointed Leicester boss from a shortlist of three. One of the other candidates was Joe Mercer - who later led Man City to the title in 1968 and the FA Cup the following year (against us).

 

1968: After Matt Gillies stood down, we appointed Frank O'Farrell, who took us to that Cup Final v Man City. The other candidate was Allan Brown, the man who so pissed off Martin O'Neill as Forest manager that he was on the verge of givng up the game and going back to his Law studies.

 

1971: When O'Farrell left us to take the Man U job our first target was Don Howe. Thankfully he wasn't interested. We got Jimmy Bloomfield instead. Can you imagine Don Howe signing Frank Worthington and Keith Weller?

 

1978:  We went down in 1978 and when Frank McLintock quit he laid the blame for the awful season at the players' door, saying they were 'completely devoid of passion' and 'a bunch of introverts'. Newspapers were speculating on who might replace him as boss. 'Possibles include John Barnwell of Peterborough, Gerry Summers of Gillingham, and Bobby Roberts of Colchester', said a report in early May. Not exactly a list to get fans rushing to renew their season tickets. What a shock it was when, in a Glasgow hotel, Jock Wallace, the man who'd just led Rangers to the treble, was announced as our new boss.

 

1991:  Before we appointed Brian Little, we were after John Beck. He stayed at Cambridge so he could complete the journey from Division Four to the top flight. He so nearly made it - in the play-off semi-final they lost 5-0 in the 2nd leg -  to you know who.

There was something I read that Paul Jewell was being set to replace Micky Adams in the summer of 2004, he was at Wigan Athletic at the time. I think it didn't go through as Leicester were wary about a quite large compensation to Wigan of which money the club didn't have at the time... sounds familiar. So club stuck with Micky Adams for a few more months.. rub salt in the wounds Wigan went on to get promoted that season.
