Spending three seasons waving his arms around and shouting at others for goals going in that were mostly his fault isn’t an attitude problem?

So he is different than others? Bit of a seriously weak reason tbh.

I’ve seen plenty of our players look annoyed at individual mistakes during that time.

Fair enough, and did appreciate Vesty tearing Abdul one yesterday. More of this type of demanding responsibility please!

Abdul is fantastic, don’t get me wrong but a culture of accountability can only help.

Absolutely this.

one post above calls him a 'cvnt'. Is this some weird manifesting by the individual?

I agree he should be sold. For his sake and ours. But the vitriol is just city fans all over. They've always hated Faes type characters.

Yeah I’d like to think this has come from changes Marti has made too. It’s probably why Vesty is playing. For all his faults, whenever a manager has given him a chance he’s taken it. (I’m aware this is his level)

Must confess to being a historic supporter of Vesty, but I thought this season would be a season too far for him. Would be delighted to be proved wrong.

Yeah, he’s definitely unfairly vilified. Having an agent who touts him around is why players hire them.

Our fan base just needs a focal point for years of accumulated rage and he’s the lightning rod.

Cupping his ears to the fans certainly helps him to conduct it.

It's still fairly likely we need to raise more funds so it'll be a case of whoever is wanted most will go and we will pick up the pieces on 2nd of September with a truly heinous squad.

Marti would have spoken to each first team player individually asking if they want to stay at the club, if they said no, then see you later. Couldn’t care if you’re the best defender or not.

I think this has played a huge role in Marti’s starting 11 too with Faes and Winks starting on the bench.

Schmeichel did this for years and nobody seemed to mind.

Yeah, as I said, aside from that there’s little evidence.

As for the arm waving, at least he gives a **** if we concede. Compare that with Harry Winks Oscar-worthy  “I hate it here and want to leave” dispassion.

Winks being a cretin pulling out of tackles doesn’t get Wout off the hook. He gets more abuse than he’s due, but he isn’t innocent. Time to part ways regardless.

Doesn't look like he cares when he's strolling about the pitch out of position for a lot of the goals we concede.

Only after being booed onto the pitch by his own fans.

I suspect that every player was informed they would be allowed to leave if an acceptable offer was received. In that case it was the players ultimate decision, although I get the impression that McAteer was under pressure to go.

So is this happening or are Besiktas just blueballing us?

Maybe it is true he's been the scapegoat for a lot of wider issues at the club, but that doesn't change the facts:

  • He's not good enough for the top flight should we get back there (not sure we will really) - two relegations now on his CV and he was a huge factor in both of them.
  • Failing to track runners then throwing his arms up to moan at his team-mates is his trademark at this point. That's where the "bad attitude" claims stem from, and he's shown it from the day he arrived at the club.
  • While on his day he's top quality at Championship level, especially when he doesn't have much to do, he's not immune to shitting the bed in the second tier either. Just the other day someone on here dug up a number of embarrassing moments from two years ago. Getting skinned by the Plymouth winger in our loss at their place was a particular lowlight. Of course he did his blame-others routine after that.
  • In hindsight, it's fair for him to feel aggrieved at fans singling him out to boo him and not other wasters like Soumare or Skipp, but sorry, the celebration against Wednesday was bloody ridiculous. Against ten men who are currently struggling to be paid at all, mostly kids, in the second tier he helped drag us back down to? Yeah, he sure showed us!
  • He's one of our club's top earners based on being signed by a board that doesn't have a clue how to negotiate contracts. Not his fault, but still an albatross around our neck from a PSR perspective for someone making appearances from the bench in the second tier.
  • Doesn't seem to be mentoring or encouraging the young guns at all. For all his faults, Choudhury did that in spades yesterday at Charlton, showing it's an individual choice by many of these players. They just choose not to, because they don't give a shit, and that's a poisonous attitude. I don't particularly want him mentoring Nelson or Okoli, because I don't think he has anything to offer them besides tips on how to dodge the barber.
  • Despite this, he's somehow a Belgian international (in fairness, most Belgian fans don't know how he is, either). That raises his value by default.

I try not to hate the guy, I really do. There are far wider issues at the club, he is a symptom rather than the disease itself. But there's baggage there that arguably isn't even present for anyone else at this club besides Danny Ward, who has now kindly pissed off to Wales. Knowing we could still get a reasonable fee for him based on his international pedigree, and knowing it's honestly not going to make a huge difference to our defence if he goes besides opening the pathway for Nelson, it really is time for him to accept it's never going to work here and do the right thing. For the pure sake of the fanbase's sanity, I'd even accept a loan.

I agree with what you say, he is a symptom more than the cause, just claiming innocence with a loaded gun was amusing - sorry!  :)
