I think I said this yesterday but a lot of there fans where talking about his pace and he is slow but the dutch league is played a lot higher tempo than the Championship.

We'll be quite dominant for large periods this season, especially if we get the midfield sorted. I'm less concerned by his top speed and more bothered about how well he can find space in the area when Fatawu, Mavididi, Monga, Ramsey, James, Ricky or Winks are trying to pick him out.

Well I disagree.  The idea that we should wait until a player has "kicked a ball for us" before being allowed to have an opinion about the signing (unless of course it is positive) is ludicrous.  It is perfectly reasonable to be excited or disappointed with any incoming based upon what you already know of a player's qualities and career to date.

Such comments are all too often laced with hyperbole using words such as 'hate' or 'writing off' when all you are doing is expressing disappointment in an incoming transfer.

Should we be universally positive about every signing regardless?  Because we have a less than impressive hit rate in recent seasons and many of those duds you could see coming a mile off.

Where did I say we should be universally positive about every signing in my reply to you?

I said views should be balanced and shared my own view. I have watched the clips and think he looks a good finisher, can clearly use both feet and seems to sort his feet out quickly to get the shot away. The latter may be affected by being in a league where there is even less time.

However, his record in Holland hasn’t been great (thought he has only been there a year and there are all kinds of reasons why it doesn’t work for a player at a particular club) and there are concerns from the feedback around his pace and ability to do it in a more difficult league.

All in, I have an open mind until I see him play for us and in the Championship and if, given a run and a chance, he is not good enough, I will say it then.

I am critical of those who just say he is shit without even giving him a chance here. There are plenty writing him off even if you choose to ignore that. I am not critical of those who are wary based on the evidence but willing to give him a chance.

I'm sure Marti will be well aware of how to get the best out of him so I am holding out some hope he will be a main stay in the team this season.

You were defending OPs comment which was basically implying any criticism was writing him off before he'd kicked a ball for us etc etc

As it stands we don't have the luxury of being able to judge how good or bad he is in our team, we can only say whether we think that it's a good signing or not.  Some do, some don't and there's nothing wrong with that.  I don't remember reading anybody writing him off or saying he's shit.

There’s been so many posts just outright calling him shit lol. Many aren’t even willing to give him a chance.

As I have said twice now but will say for a third, a balanced view is to take on board what has happened before but give him a chance.

Let’s be honest, the lad might as well go back to Holland now with our fanbase.

Very easy to be influenced by online opinion. I'm trying my best to not be swayed but it's not always easy. I will lean towards the positive side unless he's crap. Even then I will be supportive during the game whilst he's wearing our shirt and I'm in the stadium.

Don't think you remembered that well - Lineker's main assets were his pace to get ahead of his marker and then his finishing.

Yeah you're right on that l guess

Nods it in from 5 years, shushes the san siro. I’ll take that

Five years is impressive foresight, can we turn the clock back to the FA Cup win and get him in Rudkin's ear please?

I think Suzie will be very happy at this signing.   I predict a Aperol fest versus Oxford.

Yet you haven't quoted any.

Expressing disappointment is not the same as not giving a chance.   Of course he will be given a chance, we have no choice.

It doesn't matter how many times you say a balanced view is OK, or whatever, (very gracious of you, thanks), that is irrelevant.  In case you have forgotten, we are talking about a third party who has had the sense not to get involved in this and his position, which you defended,  that the criticism of this signing was writing him off before he had kicked a ball for us, as if that were relevant.

It's a really good header from an excellent cross when you see the thing properly. Nice goal all round.

Some on this forum had:

1. Manuel Akanji down as shit.

2. Mavididi as league one standard before he signed.

3. “Give Ward a go over Kasper”

4. Laughing emojis when Winks was linked.

5. Patson scoring 38 billion goals at Champ level.
6. Soumare as a “beast” and out next £70m sale.

Julian will be fine.

It is a strange argument to use that new signings are often pre-judged and that can turn out to be wrong, but then you say "Julian will be fine"...

He could be a complete dud, and on paper, there seems to be more chance of that than not.

However, I hope he settles quickly and something clicks for him here and he is a 20+ goal striker that we could really do with this season.

4 goals in a Holland and 28 goals in the MLS doesnt fill me with confidence.

Hope i’m proven wrong but Dakas numbers were better than these in similar quality leagues.

Doesn't mean anything, Daka scored a shit load in Austria and can't get a shot within the width of the penalty box in England.

I know a guy who I’ve seen playing in the local Sunday league on the local park he’s 56, tiny bit overweight likes a fag while he plays up front but scores every week !
Do you think I should contact the club or send a video to Teflon Jon  ?

What's the point in that ?

I have not intentionally criticised expressing some disappointment based on the factors I have said (pace/previous league experience etc). If I misinterpreted what you were initially justifying (thinking you were justifying outright negativity and not giving the guy a chance) then I hold my hands up and apologise.

And if you personally are giving him a chance and won’t be on his back if he doesn’t bag in his first 5 minute cameo, then again, fair enough. We probably have the same view somewhere in the middle in truth.

As said, I probably misinterpreted, but what annoys me is outright negativity and calling out a guy who hasn’t even stepped foot on the pitch for us. And there has definitely been a lot of that (and yes I have got better things to do than go back and quote a load of posts).

Honestly, our standing as it is now, and strikers being in demand, we won’t get perfect. I would have loved to see us invest in Ivanovic from Millwall but it wasn’t to happy. I do have concerns about Carranza but also hope that as an unknown, he could be a really good player for us.
