Brilliant, happily take this. Above par score especially after throwing some key wickets away. Wasn’t quite as confident at 04:05 this morning. Over rate from the Aussies piss poor again.

Weird tactics from Australia

Their heads have been on their own innings for the last half hour. Taken their eye off the ball a bit- good to see us cash in.

Well I don’t know how, but we’ve batted out the day. Well done Archer and a great innings from Root. Some stupid shots at times, but overall we’ve worked ourselves to a competitive total.

As always with this England side, you feel it could be even better, particularly the wicket column but overall, a decent to good day.

Kill some time in the morning and Aussie batting during twilight will be the dream.

Isn’t it 5% of the players match fee for every over shot of the 90 in the day?

80% of the match fee disappeared and 32 test championship points.

That was horrible tactics to slow the game down.

I'm happy with that. A century for Root, far more application in the batting than in Perth and some very valuable runs before the close.

Look forward to watching this 10th wicket partnership develop when my 5 o'clock alarm goes off tomorrow.

They’ll be an hour into play at 5am, unless you’re not in the UK!

I must admit I'm a bit of a casual when it comes to cricket but why was there talk of a possible declaration from England?

Prime bowling conditions, so much easier to bat when it’s bright sunshine and clear blue skies than it is when it’s dark and the floodlights are on.

Fair but our score surely wasn't competitive enough around the 270's when it was being mentioned

Well, if that score is offered at the start of the day, you take it. Hoping they can add just a few more tomorrow.

And Joe Root... form is temporary, class is permanent. And he is 100% the latter.

This Ben Stokes/Brendan McCullum team always look to attack, often quite recklessly.

A couple of years ago they were in a similar situation against Australia at Edgbaston. They decided to declare when 9 down with Root 120 odd not out and a capable partner in Ollie Robinson with him.

I do understand declaring when you've got two genuine tail enders at the crease but when Root is looking comfortable and is seeing it well just let him continue to knock the ball about and let the other batsman throw his hands at the ball to see where it gets them.

Obviously the quick scoring makes it look like a better decision than it might have been but I do think that continuing to bat is the right move 90% of the time. Ultimately declaring is only good if you're taking a wicket in that spell before stumps and not declaring is only good if you get on with it and score runs.

That Jacks wicket is one of the worst I have seen in some time, what was he thinking? Plays a horrendous shot at a wide ball and instead of learning from his mistake he falls for the most obvious trap of all time playing the exact same shot at the same delivery the very next ball.

Couple of quick wickets, as Bert said, in those conditions would of been worthwhile.
