I watched this last night. Excellent viewing. He went under the radar somewhat imo. We miss this type of attitude now.

Caught it the other night, it actually choked me up a bit.

We don’t have any like him anymore. Classic bit of Pearson/Walsh character led recruitment.

He was everything that Ayew is not, both had limited football abilities but Okazaki gave his all every game and made us a better team whereas Ayew plays for himself and damages the team.

That is a great like for like example.

Required to do the same job, work ethic, joy for playing for Leicester, joy for playing Football, effectiveness for Leicester literally UNIVERSES apart.

One embodies success the other tarred with the brush of a mercenary TOTAL failure

That team was full of so many complimenting players who just allowed each other to shine.

Shinji was limited, but it somehow just worked. A proper workhorse that helped elevate Vardy/Albrighton/Mahrez and still popped up with the occasional iconic moment of his own. Always played with a smile on his face too, unlike some of our more recent players in those forward positions...

Him and Fuchs in particular were such great characters off the pitch too. God, how I miss that squad.

In a nutshell totally.

Think Ayew & Winks would do the egg on head fun????

His football abilities were "limited" in the same way that all players' abilities are limited. He was technically good and an intelligent footballer too. We struggled to replace him.

I don’t think he was technically very good personally. He was fantastic for us in 15/16 and he did have a great 17/18(?) too but his passing was incredibly limited and his goals barely hit the back of the net - genuinely.

His strengths were his tenacity, stamina, selflessness and tactical understanding.

14 goals and 4 assists in 58 nineties was a sub par return all things considered, you can caveat that by saying he wasn’t a natural second striker or even attacking mid in fairness but he made up for his limitations with an incredible engine.

Every single one of that team is a legend and was integral to our win. Absolute Leicester legend and one of the most likeable players we’ve ever had. Genuinely love the guy. Had to put himself out too. Wasn’t overly happy with not being an out and out striker but he did it anyway and never gave anything less than 100%. Would have him back here in any capacity in a second.

He won the league with us, I don’t know how you can call him “sub par” considering his work gave the space to the Vardys and Mahrezs of the team.
Jesus if you think he was sub par what do you think of the current lot!!!

Still amazes me that we won the league with okazaki as a regular starter.   Yes, he worked hard, but there was nothing about his game that suggested a top six level player.

He was a forward though and has said that it was a major gripe that he had to play in a more withdrawn role and that he was never really happy here.

There wasn't for the majority of that team no?

I suppose.

And I know that it borders on blasphemy to be critical of shinji, I just never 'got it' with him.

I said his goal and assist tallies were subpar (demonstrably true) not him as a player.

I think this was exactly it though. We were just better when he played. Sometimes it’s not possible to even analyse. He made the team play better. I was reading a random Guardian write up of one of our 15/16 matches the other day for some reason and they highlighted his quiet importance.

“But there was also a crucial, unseen contribution from another impressive performer: Shinji Okazaki.

As Mahrez received the ball on the right, Okazaki glanced around to see Kanté storming forward and Vardy sprinting into the left-hand channel, so he made a clever decoy run towards the right, taking Mark Noble away from the defensive midfield zone, opening up space for Kanté to burst into, and helping to create the goal. It was textbook Okazaki: tactically intelligent, on the move, playing a supporting role.”

Sums up his importance to me. As does this…

“This was not, in conventional terms, an impressive individual forward performance. Okazaki had no shots, did not dribble past any opponents and recorded a pass completion rate of under 50%. But Okazaki excels in the small, subtle details, and his style is perfect for Leicester’s game plan. If the Foxes are a relatively limited attacking side, depending upon counterattacking and set pieces for goals, it helps to have a forward that creates opportunities in both respects.”

He was as important as any other player in my opinion. There’s no way a team like Leicester wins the league unless every single player is 100% on it every game, all season. Love the wee twat.

Okazaki even admits that he never thought he was a good player and that's why he worked so hard to make up for this. His job was to bring energy to the team as he says. Tuchel absolutely loves him.

If he is in coaching, we need to get him back- he was truly one of the hardest working players i have ever seen.

Incredible desire.

Never my favourite player but his effort was off the chart - incredible player and man

Genuine case of the sum of the parts being greater than the individual parts.

We’ve not really had it since. Even when we were good under Rodgers it didn’t quite feel like we reached the true potential with that side.

Under Maresca we just had 5 or 6 players who shouldn’t have been at this level
