The smash and grab, blood and thunder style that won us the league - THAT is our identity.

💯 💯 💯

All the emphasis is on how you get the ball from your own 6 yard box to the opposition penalty area ('progressing the ball through the lines.." But football matches are won and lost in and around both penalty areas - out of possession in defence, in possession in attack. Emphasising the build up, completely misses the point.

Source: Evidence in the performances and attitude on the pitch

Joseph was our best player... again.

Souttar was our worst player and his attitude has been all over the place. Everybody looks shit and that's on manager but it's not a lack of application from our young players.

Its like a sad paradox - everything that made us champions has been replaced with the complete opposite.

Champions era: Low posession. High risk, rough, ready, fast, furious, fearless bunch of misfits (non-academy) savouring every minute, every second and every opportunity on the pitch working hard at the belvoir drive training ground in the city.

Decline era: High posession, low risk, lethargic, lacklustre, nonchalant academy bunch enjoying life at the seagrave centre parcs complex, all looking for their next big money move - building up their personal stats without one iota of care for the result or the paying public.

Was it high risk? After the Arsenal home game where they slapped us 5-2 we used to sit everyone behind the ball with two midfield destroyers and never used to pass it out the back with a goalkeeper and defenders that wouldn't have been comfortable doing so. I'm not knocking it either. It was very effective and played to our strengths.

When we did go forward, we did so with real purpose. For the most part it wasn't intricate, but it was exciting. I certainly wouldn't call it high risk though.

What we need to learn from the last two seasons is, there is a fragility to this football club that once you go beyond that point then change does not bring an improvement.

When all feel good factor is damaged then we get even worse. I do not advocate for Martin to be given much time, as we simply don't have any. This season we must go up and/or be sold otherwise we are done for.

But the small sprinklings of new enthusiasm got quickly flattened out in the last two seasons and we acted too late. Some may argue we acted too soon givem both ended in appalling relegations but this current manager will not buy the love of his players as he'll be too busy trying to save his own skin and this will get toxic.

Spot on.

Plus, it’s blatantly obvious nothing will improve….. we’ve been burned before many times hanging on for things to change…… and they don’t. We all know how this will end, it will plunge us further and further into arse hole of league one and we will end up in a relegation fight…… just sack him now, and at least give the lads half a chance…..

If what I’m told is true and Rudkin was the man who wanted him, perhaps Top grows a pair and sacks him, Rudkin might **** off in a paddy too (pipe dream)…..

High risk in the sense that players weren't afraid to speculate and to lose the ball. More often than not passes would be delivered at pace, straight to the fwds and towards goal (no sideways and backwards).

The first half on sat is what I would consider low risk - just keeping posession for posession sake, scared to lose the ball, not creating anything, literally running down the clock at nil nil.

The problem with Martin’s system (and there are many)… is that every single player needs to be playing perfectly. Which is unrealistic. Theres always days someone will be having a bit of a rough touch or more sloppy on the ball. This system has no wriggle room every lost ball has a high chance of conceding because we are gambling on the move coming off as expected every single time.

The young guys are great but your ignorant if you don’t think they will have bad moments and brain farts galore that’s football.

On a good day we might look a very good side but if you expect our league one squad to consistently play perfect possession football then you’re simply a fool.  He won’t learn and I don’t think he’ll adapt and we are going to have lots of days like Saturday. So strap in guys because it’s going to get bleaker than imaginable

Also the system fall apart by one person being lazy/unwilling to take the final pass, instead passing back, which then resets the process. So many times you see a player stop and turn backwards instead of just taking a chance chipping a ball into space or crossing it, hoping to cause a scramble.

How many times do we see a throw in high up the pitch then 3 passes later we are getting pressed in our own half and give it away.

Yeah, I agree; most of the teams I've enjoyed playing in and watching are attacking and moving the ball quickly. After all, you're there trying to score goals. Possession is something you do when you're leading or need to break their momentum up a bit.

I'd not be surprised to see a middling performance and result, probably a draw at the weekend and another false dawn.

He'll get some results which will keep him in a job till Circ mid to late October is my prediction.

Wont get enough to keep him going much longer than that.

hmm - historically his teams get thumped after a good thumping. I presume he will be true to form and double down on his nonsense. It would be the Barnsley game i would expect a result.

Indeed, his much lauded 24 unbeaten run at Saints in 2023-24 was due to his having technically better players to play "his way", in League One it won't cut it though as Saturday's hammering by Oxford clearly showed - abd as has been strongly evident in the other games so far too, while we got lucky against Plymouth!
