Russell Martin - Confirmed as First Team Manager

Martin, on the other hand, has managed to get a team promoted into the Premier League. His job there was solid, proved after he left (despite the fact they finished 3rd the following season, they did not

go up and were then relegated).

 

I am still amazed people are still trying to compare Challinor and Martin when there is no comparison. 
 

Plus win percentages are a pointless comparison. Martin O’Neill has only a 38% win rate here yet is one of our most successful managers. Mainly because 95% of his time here was in the top flight, just like Martin has spent his time much higher than Challinor and there must be a good reason for that (this is the same Challinor that is now out of work and hasn’t been hired all summer). Great win for Stockport today too btw.

 

Edit: Just to clarify, I didn’t want Martin but he’s here now so, while he needs to win me over, I’m just not going to constantly bash him. A point away from home at a newly promoted team is a decent result. I remember going to Stockport away for Pearson’s first away game and it was horrific. The difference in opinion at the end of the game compared to today was different. Ideally, Martin needed to start with a home game to get off to a winning start like we did the last time we were at this level.

Playing Reid as a striker did it for me. He was hopeless last week and possibly worse today. This “give him time, the players are still learning” bs only holds water if the manager picks a team capable of winning football matches.

Only the first game of the season today but it was a massive game for him - Desperately need a good start and to go on a bit of a run. We have a ‘soft’ team and how we do early on will make or break us.

 

Performance and result were concerning today.

Challinor has seven promotions on his CV.  Hardly bottling it.

 

O'Neill had three top ten premier league finishes and won two trophies.

Historically he does have a tendency to start seasons poorly then go on a run.

Martin is a football manager out of central casting, looks the part, good communication, but he doesn’t so far seem to grasp the job in hand.

the "mid rebuild" stuff is a pretty damning indictment of the club as a whole tbh, like this is a style we've been supposedly trying to play for 5 odd years now, and we've signed very few who can actually pass a ball 5 yards? maybe bin it off then and don't appoint an ideologue who will insist on trying to get Okoli and the bush kangaroo to play like Beckenbauer and Pirlo. Rightly or wrongly, fans are sick of it and will have no patience for the same old shit occuring.

 

Martin could be sacked tomorrow morning and frankly I'd not be disappointed in the slightest, because we're doing the same stupid shit and getting the same stupid results. He's very clearly not learnt a single lesson from his time at rangers, or his prem spell at Southampton, and we'll be his last job in football, and for some we might as well just rip the bandaid off now. Is it a bit reactionary? sure, but does anyone have any faith that that was a one off? that we won't be in November losing with a whimper vs Bradford, having had 80% of possession and one shot on goal while the same sloppy defensive mistakes happen 6 times a game?

I'm not going to slag him off but there are some concerns even after just 2 competitive games. I'd say we just don't have the players to play the way he wants to play. As a manager in any environment you either change the personnel so you have the skill set required, or you adapt what you want to do and how you want to do it to match the skill sets of the personnel you have.

Hopefully, the players we have brought in will be able to play the way he wants to play but the core of the side that started today simply doesn't have the core skills required and I didn't see any plan B out there or any attempt to adapt.

Ultimately there isn’t one (realistic) manager we could have got that would escape criticism and be given time because the fans have had enough of the ownership and rightly so. Obviously he isn’t perfect, but if he was he wouldn’t be managing this shit show would he. 
 

Still a long way to go in this transfer window, and a good job too because that squad he’s working with is still a mess. Lacks another striker, lacks creativity, lacks height and physicality and there’s still loads laying around that don’t want to be here. 
 

Not going to judge him yet, but it has to start next week by starting Bristric and McFarlane and dropping Reid and Thomas. Hard to defend him if he doesn’t make those simple changes.
