3 years?

Thats incredible

It’s almost as if we never learn.

I just hope that we have signed him on League One wages, as that’s our current reality.

Put in loads of performance related bonuses such as promotion etc.

Another one where we've ended up taking on risk. He was a good player and if he's anything like Ipswich Chaplin then yeah, fair enough. But signs of drop off are there and, as ever, we've gone too heavy on the contract length.

History tells us it won't be.

I’m alright with Chaplin generally and Ipswich fans speak highly.

My only concern currently would be that Alves got great reviews playing centrally at the weekend and Page I have felt was more of an attacking midfielder. Having BDR on the books as well seems a bit overkill.

Unless the plan is for Alves off the left. Or if Martin sees Page playing deeper. And BDR possibly to leave? Probably needs some of those to happen.

But is he the same player , we have a habit of buying players that are over the hill

We are not the same club at the top of the Championship. He turned 29 in February, how is that over the hill?

I suspect the 3 year deal was required to actually get him to join us. I think there were likely some Championship clubs he could have gone to.

3 years is too long for him, but 29 is not "over the hill" lol

If he was 32 and we are giving him a 3 year deal, I would get the uproar. Since when is someone who turned 29 a few months ago, now over the hill?

Yeah I tend to agree with you, but also throw into the mix that on his last two loans, Alves has missed a fair chunk of the season through injury. I think it would be a little naïve to think he can play most games this coming season.

Yeah I don’t think we can rely solely on him. And Page is young. But yeah, we don’t need all 4 ear marked for that no 10 position. But if BDR did go, or the other are likely to be in the other positions then that works.

Ideally we have a squad who can be flexible and cover more than one position though.

2 years plus a one year option, 3 years straight off the bat is silly, it’s unlikely we’d be able to sell him for a non-negligible fee.

We’re not a standard Championship->L1 team so we have to think are signings upwardly mobile? Chaplin isn’t

Think you’re right about Page, think he and Braybrooke may be competing for the deeper role and Alves vs Chaplin for the advanced one- wouldn’t be surprised if you’re also right about Alves on the left and we bring another attacking mid in

Just like Ings , some people are remembering the player who they use to be but not the current player

i remember Chaplin being a very good player in that Ipswich side , so something is clearly wrong

This club is not learning by it’s mistakes

If Fatawu leave we have one experienced wide player in Mavididi, Alves and BCDR will be need in wide areas which they have both done before.

One Winks leaves we have only Skipp amd Hamza who maybe needed at RB, so Page and other well need to fill in.

Sqaud is pretty bare.

I think he was played out of position at Pompey.

Out of interest why has he not renewed with Ipswich.

If he still has the same quality as he did in 22/23 and 23/24 you would think there would still be some use for him as a squad player for Ipswich.

For me Ipswich not being willing to renew is an indicator of him slowing down but it would be interesting to hear from someone who is more clued in on the Ipswich side of things.

Perhaps he wasn't keen on being "some use as a squad player"

He's gonna get far more playing time here.

Ipswich fans seem to think he will be a very good signing for us.

Im more optimistic about this signing then any we have made for a while ..

He will get bare minimum 15 goals in 1st division ..

Im quite happy for anyone to refer back to this come end of season..

Potentially League 1 POTS if used correctly under RM. The cutback crosses, a big feature in RM’s play-style seem tailor made for him to arrive onto.

I’d also give him the armband!
It needs someone who’s not been part of the last 3-4 seasons of decline and acceptance around the club and from the opinions/reviews he seems to be a character that sets the standards.

In theory, it’s a sensible signing - experienced pro, in his prime years, in a key focal point position in the team.

But I do wonder if he’ll end up being side lined by someone from our academy (which may not be a bad thing either).
